The real reason four-star Gen. Kevin Byrnes was fired and "publicly humiliated" wasn't just over an alleged affair with a civilian woman, not connected to the military or the federal government.  The highly-respected Vietnam veteran and TRADOC commander was canned because a spiteful secretary of defense, Donald Rumsfeld, saw an opportunity to "punish" the general for perceived dissent and "send a message" to other top brass to "stay in line" on the war and BRAC cutbacks, a deep-cover source tells MilitaryCorruption.com.

Over a pay phone connection not far from the Embassy Suites in Crystal City, one of our most reliable and well-placed CI's (confidential informants) at the Pentagon said the "sex charge" (adultery) was just an "opportunity" for Rummie to hurt Byrnes before the 36-year Army veteran could retire in three months.

"They could have quietly let him go out the back door with a rap on the knuckles," the source said.  "After all, the general didn't rape anyone. He didn't provide promotions for sex like Fiscus did [Former U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Thomas Fiscus, top legal officer in the USAF, who admitted sexual affairs with numerous women and got a slap on the wrist and no jail time when caught].  The woman, I am told, has nothing to do with the military.  He [Gen. Byrnes] was legally separated from his wife. Getting a divorce, for Christ's sake! This is all a crock of shit."

DETAILS ON WHAT REALLY HAPPENED

(MCC):  "Why hurt the Army's image like this, and what's the real reason Byrnes got the axe?"

(C I ): "Because he [Byrnes] dared to disagree with Rumsfeld behind closed doors on troop level strength in Iraq, for one thing.  That was at the start of the war.  There's been bad blood between them ever since."

(MCC):  Even so, the general was set to retire in 90 days.  Why not avoid all the bad press and personal humiliation to a man who's dedicated his adult life to serving his country with honor?"

(C I ): "He (Rumsfeld) doesn't see it that way.  Either you follow him in lockstep and kiss his ass or he will crush you.  Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but he will hurt you in the long run.  And this extraordinary firing was designed for two things.  To destroy this man's reputation and to send a message to other generals of what could happen to them."

DESTROYING THE GENERAL'S REPUTATION

Word of the firing of the third most senior four-star general in the U.S. Army came on August 9, 2005 with a cryptic two-line statement from the Pentagon.  It said Byrnes had been dumped because of "personal misconduct."  All our phone calls dug out in the first few hours of the bombshell announcement was, that the dismissal had to do with a "sex charge."

Which is exactly what a slimy reptilian like Rumsfeld would like to infer to the media and the public. Dirty innuendo.  Gee, maybe the general was playing around with little girls, or worse, little boys!  Perhaps he'd done favors in exchange for sex from a female enlisted member of his staff.  Maybe he was into whips and chains, like some other top brass at the puzzle palace.

No, it turned out.  None of that.

Gen. Byrnes lawyer, LTC Dave Robertson, summed it up in a brief e-mailed statement:

"The allegations against Gen. Byrnes involve a consensual, adult relationship with a woman who is not in the military, nor is she a civilian employee of the military or federal government."

MilitaryCorruption.com has confirmed the general had a legal separation at the time of the affair and has since obtained or is obtaining divorce papers.

There is no way that the "good order and discipline" of the Army could possibly be adversely affected by this relationship, as it was generally unknown to the brass, the troops and certainly the civilian world.  Anyway, the much-decorated officer was set to retire from the Army before the end of this year.

AN EDITORIAL

Once upon a time there was another despotic, dictatorial and - in his case - "degenerate" top government official. You got it! That old bastard, J. Edgar Hoover, whose much feared "sex files" were used to blackmail many a senator and even President.  Hoover was reputed to be a self-loathing homosexual and ugly transvestite.

The disgraced former FBI Director might find a "soul mate" in the crocodile-smiling, Machiavellian "Rummy" if he was still alive.  If  Hoover's longtime boyfriend, Clyde Tolson were still around, they could make it a threesome at the Washington hotel where the old pervert sponged off free meals and drinks for decades.  Hoover and Rummy could compare notes on how to brutalize underlings and maintain absolute, iron-fisted control.

Put a monocle in Rummy's right eye and a riding crop in his left hand, and one could imagine a shout of SEIG HEIL emanating from his thin lips.  As for J. Edgar, the thought of his bug-eyes, fat jowls and expansive waistline, brings to mind the repulsive visage of Nazi-crime boss Hermann Goering.

It takes a coward to stab a man like Gen. Byrnes in the back, and if our source is right -  and he always has been in the past - it's about time President Bush assumed command and told Rumsfeld it is time to GO!

Health reasons, whatever "excuse" the Pentagon PAO Office can cook up, just use it, and leave!  You are looking more and more like Robert Strange McNamara every day.  We've lost enough lives unnecessarily in Iraq.  There's STILL Humvees without proper armor protection.  It's been months since you arrogantly "talked down" to that brave trooper at one of your dog and pony show "meet the troops" photo ops when he bravely asked you the tough questions that needed to be asked.

As combat veterans and loyal Americans, we at MilitaryCorruption.com pray every night for our troops "in harm's way" and want this war to end - honorably - as soon as possible.  Cutting and running now is not the answer.  But firing someone who really deserves to get the boot would be a step in the right direction.

Resign, Rumsfeld.  For the good of the country and all our armed forces.  Just go!  Don't let the door hit your backside on the way out.
