SGT Adam Holcomb got off easy. He could have gone to prison for two years and received a dishonorable discharge for his role in driving a young private to suicide in Afghanistan.

Instead, a 10 member court-martial panel at Fort Bragg slapped the 30 year-old junior NCO on the wrist with a one-grade bust to SPC E-4 and a fine of a little over $1000. Holcomb, who was one of several soldiers who conducted a reign of terror against the 19 year-old Chinese-American that finally drove the soldier over the edge - he shot himself in a guard tower in Kandahar Province last October - gets to stay in the Army.

Holcomb was convicted of assault and maltreatment but escaped the more serious charge of negligent homicide. He will do 30 days in prison and lose a stripe. Want to bet that he'll have his sergeant's rank back a year from now?

NO LEADERSHIP OR MENTORING FROM THIS NCO

An NCO is supposed to lead and mentor his troops. Holcomb preferred being a bully and a punk.

Prosecutors said the stocky sergeant dragged Chen over sharp rocks and called him "chink" and "gook." We wonder what would have been the court martial result if the slender soldier had been Black and the noncom called him the "N" word? You can be sure Holcomb would have lost more than one pay grade.

Danny Chen's life wasn't worth much to the Army. Keeping a low-life like Holcomb in the military is a mistake.
