Was an editor asleep at the switch when Air Force TIMES (March 20) published an article on its electronic edition that clearly inferred that this web site, recipient of an apology from the Pentagon press office (see related stories box below), has been "debunked" for conducting "an online smear campaign" against the controversial "kidnapped in Kyrgyzstan" mararthon runner Jill Metzger?
In all our years of writing and teaching journalism, we've never seen such an irresponsible lead graf. In fact, it sounds like rookie TIMES reporter Jeff Schogol (really a nice guy) was snookered by Pentagon flak Maj. Tracy Bunko (that's right, BUNKO, as in "con job") into regurgitating her views on what she - or her masters - think of this web site, whose motto is: FIGHTING FOR THE TRUTH . . . EXPOSING THE CORRUPT.
We're not exactly beloved in the Air Force public affairs office, especially after we were one of the first to expose then-Maj. Gen. Thomas J. Fiscus, chief legal officer (JAG) of the Air Force for being the fake, phony and pious fraud he is. You see, Fiscus "got caught with his pants down" and had to admit to sex with more than a dozen subordinate females, officer and enlisted. While lower rankers would have been court-martialed and booted out of the military, Fiscus was "taken care of" by his brass hat buddies and avoided even the indignity of an Article 32 hearing. He was retired and reduced in rank to colonel, but he still avoided real punishment. That could have cost him his pension and benefits.
AIR FORCE TIMES LOSES CREDIBILITY
Actually it's sad to see a once-respectable newspaper become virtually a "house-organ" for the Pentagon. These lapdogs at Air Force TIMES ought to realize that credibility is critical to survival, perhaps why we at MilitaryCorruption.com have lasted 12 years and grown to up to six million hits a month (worldwide). You see, we give the reader the unvarnished truth. They know when they are being BS'd by the mainstream media. Especially, the fine men and women of the United States Air Force.
For the past six years, they've been disrespected and treated to one of the most massive cover-ups in Air Force history. Millions of taxpayer dollars have been spent investigating a "kidnapping" that many people, including OSI agents (see related stories box below) who investigated the case on the ground, believe is a "dog ate my homework" lie.
Maj. Jill Metzger-Mayo (now a protocol officer at Travis AFB) claimed such "derring-do" by "overpowering" one of her guards in the third day of her "captivity" and then running barefoot and naked, some 30 miles through the Kyrgyzstan countryside to freedom, you have to wonder why, some six years later, this hard-charger, she-warrior hasn't been decorated with the Air Force Cross, written a best-selling book, done Oprah and the talk shows, had a TV-movie made, or gone on a whirlwind tour recruiting more "super-achiever" females to wear Air Force blue.
Could it be because her story is preposterous? Jill's collecting a 100% "disability" check while actively running in the Air Force and Marine Corps Marathons must have made her chief protector blanch, but up until recently, everyone was afraid to cross bully-boy Gen. Gary North, so Metzger was, as they say, untouchable. Some of our readers, unlucky to have been genuinely disabled and lacking that lucrative 100% rating, wrote us to express their outrage. Their protests, and that of their family members, were ignored by the Air Force who, until last week, refused to make any comment on the Metzger fiasco.
WHY DID THE TIMES IGNORE THIS STORY FOR SIX YEARS?
We realize Air Force TIMES is just a shadow of its former self - you can practically slip a thin copy under the door these days, they're so strapped for ads - but they do owe their readers more than gratuitous attacks on those who actually do investigative journalism and don't play favorites.
Where was Air Force TIMES since September 2006 in covering this story? They were AWOL. Re-writing Pentagon press releases, or quoting "Daddy Metzger" - a retired Air Force colonel whose purple prose in a ludicrous article about darling daughter's great heroics, was even too much for OSI to stomach. Sources said after that appeared in the TIMES (October 2006) they told him to keep his big mouth shut.
One mouth that's stayed shut is Metzger-Mayo (her young hubby is an OSI agent and captain in the Air Force). You would think she would like to "cash in" on her Hollywood-style adventures, but maybe she'll be pacified with a promotion (below-zone) to light colonel. Word is the 0-5 board met at Randolph on December 5, closed ten days later, and will release the names of the lucky ones receiving silver oak leaves on March 27.
Will the officer now going by the name "Jill Mayo" be on that list? Stay tuned.
A SLICK WAY TO AVOID A LIBEL CHARGE
Critics will say the TIMES didn't actually use our URL, www.militarycorruption.com, to describe us as being debunked or smear artists, therefore no "libel" was committed. Maybe so. A judge and jury can decide that. And the court of public opinion, who buy, or chose not to buy, newspapers. But the "inferrence" was there as it being MCC. Other than our friend Cliff Kincaid of Accuracy in Media, we are the only journalists on the Internet who have covered this case all the way through.
Perhaps the word "cowardly" could best describe such a "smear," when it is evident to many that Air Force TIMES has apparently gone out of its way since 2006 to avoid reporting any "news" on Metzger that the Pentagon would frown upon. We at MCC "suck up" to no one, and instead of the $3.25 one has to plunk down at the BX for a slimmer and slimmer weekly newspaper, we at MilitaryCorruption.com are the same price we were in 2000, when we launched - FREE of charge.
From Air Force TIMES (March 20, 2012)
The Air Force has confirmed that a major who went missing in Kyrgyzs.tan six years ago was kidnapped, debunking an online smear campaign that claimed she went AWOL
Note the lack of quotation marks or attribution to the charge. Now, we are going to give you the link to the heavily-redacted Air Force OSI "investigative" report. Please read it and then let us know if you see in there anywhere that it is proven Metzger was indeed kidnapped, and that we at MCC have been "debunked" or set out on an "internet smear campaign."
Once you e-mail us, then take a minute and call the news editor at Air Force TIMES. Toll-free at (800) 424-9335. Tell them what you think of their journalism, and ours. We (at MCC) stand by our stories, every one.
