DEFENSE SECRETARY ASHTON CARTERIf embattled Defense Chief Ashton Carter wasn't so intent on creating a "stone wall of silence" as to why he fired his top military advisor more than three weeks ago, would he have done what his predecessors (Gates, Panetta, Hagel) declined to do?

Ordering all combat jobs open to women takes the focus off why Carter refuses to reveal the truth about what caused him to abruptly dismiss his favorite officer as senior military advisor.

But that is only a temporary measure. We hope the mainstream media will do what MilitaryCorruption.com has done - remind Obama's appointee every single day, that he has yet to "come clean" on Gen. Ron Lewis's conduct, and the reason he had to go.

Rumors are rife throughout the halls of the Pentagon, some of them more lurid than before. It does the dumped general no good for this to continue. We doubt if Carter can keep the cover-up going much longer, but word is, he has rejected the best advice of his public affairs people and is determined to conceal one of the biggest mistakes in judgment during his lifetime.

AN IMPRACTICAL POLICY

As for the unprecedented action of allowing women to serve in front-line combat units, such as Special Forces and the infantry, Ashton will meet strong resistance on that, both in Congress, and even among some military brass.

"This kind of social engineering may be politically correct, but it will cost lives," predicted an Army colonel at the Pentagon. "Human nature being what it is, relationships will result from this, which will undermine unit cohesion and morale."

There is also the fact that many women simply do not possess the physical strength to match their male counterparts. How are they expected to carry a wounded 200-pound rifleman or paratrooper from the battlefield to safety and not get killed themselves?

We don't doubt there are select women who are rough and tough enough to perform to standard, but why not place them in an all-women, or even all-lesbian unit, where they could fight to their hearts' content, yet not cause the relationship problems inherent in a mixed-gender combat organization?

Former Marine Commandant, and now Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Joseph Dunford, had it right last year when he cited a study that showed integrated combat units were "slower, fired weapons with less accuracy, and had more injuries."

Whether the White House will muzzle him, or Dunford resign or retire in protest, remains to be seen. He is a man of high integrity.
