There's no fool like an old fool.
Benjamin Bishop found this out in Hawaii after the Feds nabbed him for allegedly passing defense documents to his mistress, a 27 year-old Chinese woman here on a student visa. Bishop is 59.
A veteran of Special Forces and a government contractor at PACOM, Bishop knew what he was doing was wrong, but like sex-addled idiots before him, he apparently was willing to sell out his country in exchange for climbing in the sack with a skanky whore. The Army Reserve LTC was divorced last year from his wife in Utah.
LAWYER MAKES POOR EXCUSE FOR "TRAITOR"
"Col. Bishop has served his country for 29 years, and would never intentionally do anything to harm the United States," said Honolulu attorney Birney Bervar.
The key word here, gang, is "intentionally." An irresponsible kid playing with matches in a crowded circus tent doesn't "intend" to burn up hundreds of people, but can kill just as many as an Arab terrorist with a bomb strapped on his back. It's hard to believe Bishop could have been so stupid as to have been caught in an espionage "honey trap" - a trick as old as the hills.
He told authorities he met the foreign student at a conference on military defense issues. Didn't it dawn on him that a girl 32 years younger than him wasn't screwing him for his body? How deep in denial could Bishop be?
When she started talking about secret documents, that's when he should have gone straight to the FBI, but instead, the old fool feared he might "lose" his mistress and so - perhaps to impress her - started to supply his gal pal with secret documents to show how much he "loved" her and how "important" a man he was.
MAKE AN EXAMPLE OF HIM TO DETER OTHERS
Bishop is charged with one count of "communicating national defense information to a person not entitled to receive it," and a single count of "unlawfully retaining national defense documents and plans." Investigators discovered at least 12 such plans and papers "unsecured" in his hilltop home overlooking Pearl Harbor and the city of Honolulu.
MilitaryCorruption.com has learned the affair began in June 2011 and the unidentified female "spy" worked Bishop slowly. It appears he didn't start funneling her secret intel until the following year.
There's no question Bishop didn't realize the dirty and dangerous game he was playing. The rules are clear. As a PACOM contractor and someone with his level of military clearance, he had to report any contact with foreign nationals.
According to the federal indictment handed down in Hawaii, Bishop passed info to the Chinese "Mata Hari" via e-mail and telephone. It is alleged he revealed to the young woman intel on the deployment of U.S. strategic nuclear systems and our ability to detect other nation's low and medium-range missiles.
NONE DARE CALL IT TREASON
While this rat has a right to his day in court, it is especially repugnant that someone with his training and knowledge about the dangers of betraying one's country, went ahead and did it anyway.
The U.S. Attorney's Office says Bishop faces up to 20 years in prison on the current charges. We have to wonder why the government hasn't upped the ante so this traitor never gets out of jail in his lifetime.
Depending on the damage done to our nation's national defense by this fool, maybe we ought to look into imposing the ultimate penalty - for treason.
That way, he'd never betray us again.
