Brandon Bertolo loved the Army and enjoyed his job as a line medic with Brave Company of 2nd Bn., 502nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division.

The 23 year-old paratrooper had a clean record and was usually upbeat and friendly around his fellow GI's.

Now he is dead under mysterious circumstances. The tall, 6' 2" soldier's body was discovered July 19 in a wooded area of the south end of Fort Campbell, Ky. As of press time, no cause of death - suicide or homicide - has been released.

The case is being investigated by the Army CID. SPC Bertolo was listed as AWOL on July 14 when he failed to report to his unit or have any contact with family or friends.

WHY WAS CID LOOKING INTO BERTOLO?

Our CI's at Campbell report there are plenty of rumors floating around, one that the enlisted man was "under investigation" for some offense that has not been revealed.

But could whatever happened have been so terrible that this soldier with a spotless record and combat duty in Afghanistan, throw away his future by suddenly going over the hill?

Or was he killed? That's what some buddies think might have happened, but they don't want to be identified.

"It'll be called a suicide, and then they'll move on," said one cynical GI.
