CROOKED CHOPPER PILOT IN KOREA
CONVICTED OF RIPPING OFF FELLOW
OFFICERS IN PHONY LAND INVESTMENT
DEAL - CW2 ANIBAL CANDELARIO OPTS
FOR JUDGE INSTEAD OF COURT-MARTIAL
BY PANEL OF HIS PEERS - GETS NINE
MONTHS IN SLAMMER AND KICKED OUT
OF ARMY - "GOOD RIDDANCE!"
It's no mystery why a crooked chopper pilot in Korea opted for a judge to decide his fate instead of a court-martial panel of his peers. He knew that he'd pulled one of the dirtiest deals a soldier can do to a fellow trooper in uniform. Cheat them with lies and fraud.
And that's just what CW2 Anibal Candelario pulled on a captain and three other warrant officers.
The deceitful flyer dummied up phony documents to make it look like he was "in business" with mega-money outfits like Daewoo International and Wells Fargo Bank Services. Candelario even forged signatures on official letters to convince his "marks" that the big bucks scam he was enticing them to enter into, was on the "up-and-up." It wasn't.
WARRANT OFFICER RAN "$CAM" FOR MORE THAN TWO YEARS
BEFORE BEING CAUGHT
Investigators say the helicopter jockey ripped off the above-mentioned victims to the tune of $125,000. The elaborate scheme was said to have operated between January 2005 and October 2007.
It's not entirely clear what Candelario figured would happen to him when his fellow pilots realized they had been taken. But his fraud was exposed, and he was sentenced to nine months in the slammer and a dishonorable discharge from the Army.
The con-man from Headquarters and Headquarters Co., 3-2 General Support Aviation Bn. of the 2nd Infantry Div., was lucky he didn't receive a more severe punishment - like some "frontier justice" in the ready tent.
At least the cheated chopper pilots, all but one, got back every dollar of the money lost in investments in land supposedly located in Alabama, Florida and Italy. Most people caught up in such schemes don't begin to recover most, much less all, of losses like that.
