THE HOT SEAT”
Embattled Carlisle Barracks Commandant, Maj. Gen. David Huntoon, is being blamed by nervous post workers and even some of the military garrison, for bringing “embarrassment” to the Pennsylvania Army installation by his stubborn refusal to “be reasonable” in the case of the Bradley aide “gun grab.”
Readers of MilitaryCorruption.com, and now the ARMY TIMES, as well as local newspapers – the Harrisburg Patriot-News and Carlisle Sentinel – are aware of what Barracks officials hoped they could keep from Charles Honeycutt (former aide of the late Gen. Omar Bradley) – that they had possession of his personal property, a commemorative .45 cal. handgun given him by the late Gen. Bradley’s widow – and had no intention of acknowledging they even had it and were not going to give it back!
The public affairs office on post failed to “put out the fire,” despite a close relationship with the friendly town newspaper, and now the scandalous story is fast growing “legs.”
CHANNEL 27 IN HARRISBURG DESERVES OUR THANKS
It took WHTM-TV, the ABC affiliate in Harrisburg, to go on post and demand that our favorite public affairs officer, LTC Merideth “Bumbling” Bucher, admit the weapon was there. After some initial stonewalling, one reporter from the three-member crew was allowed to see but not handle the disputed weapon.
MilitaryCorruption.com and Honeycutt had armed the Channel 27 reporter with a copy of the Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms ownership document (ATF F-4473) dated 23 Oct 2001, which fully authenticated the former aide’s claim to be the rightful owner of the weapon.
When the colonel was asked by the reporter to “read off” the serial number on the pistol, the numbers he recited exactly matched those on the form. “Voila!” After months of refusal to come out and admit to Honeycutt they even had his gun – we published a series of plaintive e-mails from the ex-Bradley aide to Barracks officials in an earlier article on this scandal – now the Army had to acknowledge they had the weapon after all.
It is a serious federal crime to illegally transport a firearm across state lines. The punishment is a stiff fine and at least 10 years in prison. We don’t expect any military officers of high rank to go to jail. Not at all! But we think some civilians involved in this case may be well advised to hire legal counsel – as soon as possible!
YET ANOTHER SCANDAL AT CARLISLE BARRACKS
While we have reported the basic facts in this scandal earlier, we’ll quickly recap the dispute for our new readers (see “related stories box” at end of this article for background info).
Mrs. “Kitty” Bradley passed away in February of 2004. Her longtime and devoted aide (who also served her husband, Gen. Omar Bradley for many years) Charles Honeycutt of Desert Hot Springs, Calif., assisted the Army by making funeral arrangements and fully cooperating with Carlisle Barracks officials who arrived in California to take possession of estate items left them – and the Omar Bradley Foundation – in Mrs. Bradley’s will.
From the beginning, the Army and Gen. Huntoon’s self-described “personal representative,” retired LTC Conrad Crane, was told – in front of a witness (a Bradley family member) – not to remove or take a certain commemorative .45 cal. handgun that was set up in a display case in Mrs. Bradley’s Rancho Mirage, Calif. mansion.
Honeycutt explained that the weapon was a “gift” to him from Mrs. Bradley in recognition of his many years of faithful service. He told Crane that he had documentation to prove the gun was his.
Our team of investigators in California confirmed Honeycutt was telling the truth.
And there the matter should have ended.
But, alerted a few months later by the Bradley house maid that the Army had taken the weapon anyway, Honeycutt tried in vain to get Carlisle Barracks officials to acknowledge they had the gun. A reading of e-mail traffic between the aide and JAG officers on the barracks clearly show a pattern of “stonewalling” and an attempt to avoid admitting they possessed the disputed pistol.
We at MilitaryCorruption.com broke this story exclusively on December 7, 2004. This was followed by news articles in two local newspapers, news reports on various area radio stations, the invaluable help of WHTM-TV Harrisburg, and now, most recently, a news story in the influential ARMY TIMES.
TWO GENERALS ASK HUNTOON: “DO THE RIGHT THING”
In January, we were first to report the unprecedented action of not one, but two retired Army generals, both with close connections to Omar Bradley and family, urging Gen. Huntoon to “do the right thing” and “return” the commemorative handgun to “it’s rightful owner,” Charles Honeycutt.
Even an appeal by two of his fellow “flag officers” – highly-decorated retired Brig. Gen. Arch Hamblen and former Bradley family chaplain, retired Brig. Gen. George Vogel – failed to move Huntoon to bring an end to the controversy.
With all the flexibility of an arrogant Pharoah, refusing to let the Israelites leave Egypt in the face of famine and pestilence brought down by God himself, this incident continues to fester and bring embarrassment to an Army installation already threatened by a possibly “adverse decision” of the BRAC (Base Realignment Commission).
POST WORKERS WORRIED ABOUT HUNTOON STANCE
“It’s about time Huntoon woke up to reality,” said a frustrated civilian worker on post. “We don’t need all this bad publicity. The commandant’s refusal to be reasonable on this issue endangers our jobs and future here. His arrogance and stupidity is appalling in face of what is at stake!”
Members of the military garrison have (carefully) contacted MCC with their concerns about what the “gun grab” scandal could do, as well. No one wanted to go “on record” for obvious reasons. A serious cause for concern is the vicious “witch hunt” last year launched by Huntoon and his “right-hand man,” chief-of-staff, COL Mike “NO COMBAT” Colpo.
We received many complaints at the time from the civilian work force, and some of the Army garrison, that “heavy-handed tactics” were being used to “root out” sources of information for our popular monthly column “CARLISLE BARRACKS CAPERS.”
The provost marshal (PMO) and other zealous officials intimidated and interrogated “suspects” about their contacts with this web site. Computer hard drives were seized and studied for “evidence.” Snitches and sycophants were quizzed as to what they knew. Even the fat BUDDHA “rolled over” after being promised his pension and continued paycheck for “ratting out” confidential sources on post.
No expense or effort was spared in trying to “stifle” MilitaryCorruption.com’s ability to truthfully report all the news of what’s going on, not just the propaganda and “sanitized version” of events as published in the Carlisle Barracks BANNER.
MAINSTREAM NEWS MEDIA READS AND RESPECTS MCC
For example, it was this web site that many “mainstream news media” outlets turned to for the complete story when an Army wife was brutally murdered after she caught her lt. colonel hubby ogling child porn on a computer at Carlisle Barracks. It was also MilitaryCorruption.com that gave our readers and journalistic colleagues full details of the scandal that top brass tried to cover up in the COL Alan Cate case.
This “brass hat” was the former head of the Army Heritage and Education Center who, it turned out, had a habit of advertising himself as a swinger on sleazy Internet “sex sites” looking for “partners.” This dummy even billed himself as a “high-ranking officer.”
Well, he ended up throwing one of his girlfriends to the ground, and with his hands around her neck, threatened to kill the terrified lady and her dog! He was right back at work on post the day after his arrest by local cops. The incident fortunately took place “off post.” If it had occurred on the military reservation, chances are we might never have heard about it.
Frightened female workers at the barracks quickly contacted us and asked why the Command was so “insensitive” as to let this colonel walk among them in view of the seriousness of the charges lodged against him. They criticized Huntoon’s so-called “leadership” and “lack of common sense,” ever since the “boy-wonder general” assumed command at the post in 2003.
WE DEFEAT “CENSORSHIP” ATTEMPT AT BARRACKS
One would think the “top brass” at Carlisle Barracks would be “wary” of tangling with us again, after MilitaryCorruption.com made national news in successfully defeating an attempt by the “powers-that-be” to illegally (in violation of the First Amendment to the Constitution) shut off access to our news web site at on-post computers.
We recall the arrogant and idiotic comment by “Bumbling” Bucher when she told the media that censorship had been clamped on us “in order to promote good order and discipline.” As one of our readers wrote in at the time, “She might as well have added a Seig Heil at the end, her comments were so totalitarian.”
Now, here we go again! Yet another “scandal” at Carlisle Barracks! We know better than to think “Rummy” is going to pick up the phone and “read the riot act” to his pet, Huntoon. He’s still smarting from our – and other media outlets like ARMY TIMES – calling on him to “resign” as a megalomaniacal “failure” as secretary of defense.
CAUGHT IN THE ACT!
It was a Rumsfeld public affairs officer who stupidly sent a series of profanity-laced e-mails to our editor-in-chief, threatening us to be “prepared for the consequences” of what we were writing. The dumb-ass didn’t know we have a very capable webmaster who quickly “tracked down” the cowardly offender right to his desk computer in the Pentagon press office!
We demanded and won a written apology from COL Gary Keck, Navy Lt. Cdr. Dan Hetlage’s then-boss. While we are gratified that this naval officer soon found himself transferred “down to the minors” (a move from the Pentagon Press Office to DINFOS isn’t exactly a “career enhancer”) we are well-aware that Huntoon and his apparent enabler, Rumsfeld, are loath to do anything that could cause MilitaryCorruption.com to be able to claim victory in the “gun grab” case.
Well, get over it, you two! This case is headed for a multi-million dollar lawsuit, and with absolute proof that Honeycutt owns the gun that was arbitrarily grabbed by Carlisle Barracks officials – despite their being informed it was his private property – the repercussions will be very severe.
WILL HUNTOON FINALLY “WISE UP?”
Gen. Huntoon can still “take the heat off” Carlisle Barracks by lifting his telephone, issuing appropriate orders, and returning to Honeycutt what’s rightfully his. But, by letting “arrogance of power” go to his head, Huntoon can only further embarrass the Army and prematurely end his meteoric military career.
We have nothing “personal” against the general, even though he is – in our opinion – one of the most inept commandants to occupy his office in the past 20 years. Nothing would please us more than to see the general finally come to his senses. But experience has taught us, not to hold our breath waiting for this man to – in the words of two generals, Hamblen and Vogel – “do the right thing.”
[EDITOR’S NOTE: Coming soon, we will expose Carlisle Barrack’s clumsy attempts to “blow off” the “hand-gun grab” scandal – in correspondence we’ve obtained (is there a “mole” in Root Hall?) – sent to Congresswoman Mary Bono’s office. Incredible! They just dig a deeper hole for themselves! We will gleefully refute, line-by-line, their convoluted and contradictory comments. Be sure to be watching MilitaryCorruption.com for the latest developments.]
