TIP OF THE ICEBERG,” INSIDE
Inside sources at the once-respected Army post say, “There’s no way a full accounting can be made of all the valuable memorabilia they’ve received.” People “in the know” say that having to hand over the disputed commemorative .45 caliber pistol, converted from it’s rightful owner, may be the least of the Command’s mounting troubles.
Former Bradley aide Charles Honeycutt says demanding a full and complete accounting is a real possibility. The highly-respected and longtime aide to America’s most beloved five-star general is said to have lists of what was sent that can be checked with what the Foundation managers can produce. If items are gone, and their absence unexplained, it could open up an even bigger scandal that would rock Carlisle Barracks and the Army to its very foundations!
“It’s bad enough the Command is seen as trying to rip-off this elderly and ill man’s personal property,” said one longtime female worker at Collins Hall, “but if it turns out valuable artifacts and donations to the Bradley Foundation have been looted or sold off, someone could and should go to jail!”
“BYE-BYE” TO MIKE “NO COMBAT” COLPO
Huntoon’s right-hand man and chief of staff, COL Mike “NO COMBAT” Colpo, is definitely leaving his job in a very short time. Whether he will retire and get a big-paying civilian job on post – using the well-known “revolving door for favored colonels” – remains to be seen.
We do know his replacement will be COL Louis G. Yuengert, but the Command is very tight-lipped on when the change will actually take place. We hear it’s June.
It will be interesting to see if Colpo retires and gets a big “send-off.” MCC thinks Colpo, the West Point grad and Infantry branch “chairborne ranger,” who successfully rode a desk for nearly three decades, deserves some sort of “recognition” for his skill at not going overseas once in his long military career, let alone getting involved in such nastiness as “combat” anywhere in the world.
One of our many readers on post wrote us that one of the “biggest rats of all is now jumping ship on the sinking S.S. Huntoon,” but we beg to differ. We don’t feel Colpo wants to retire before the “gun grab” case goes into federal court and those responsible for the shameful abuse of former Bradley aide Charles Honeycutt are punished.
No, we’d like to think “NO COMBAT” Colpo’s “as innocent as the pure, driven snow” and won’t be recalled to active duty to answer for what went on in the most embarrassing scandal to hit Carlisle Barracks since the Bartlett murder case.
He may be “arrogant, obnoxious, two-faced, and not to be trusted” – according to many post workers, past and present, who have contacted us over the years – but we still want to give good old “Mikey” the benefit of the doubt. We prefer to think he is not at all dishonest.
WHY ALL THE RESTRICTIONS?
Rumors are flying as to what has happened to the gun Conrad Crane took out of California – illegally transporting a firearm across state lines is a federal offence – and why “fast-track, former Pentagon flack,” public affairs officer LTC Merideth “Bumbling” Bucher insisted that no pictures or photographs of the alleged gun be taken by WHTM-TV (Channel 27 ABC in Harrisburg, Pa.)
Readers of this web site will recall – see “related stories” box at end of this article – not only were photos of the disputed gun forbidden, but the television reporter wasn’t even allowed to hold, or perhaps more significantly, “heft” the weapon in her hands. The difference in weight between a replica and the real thing is easy to ascertain.
Could it be those strange restrictions were made because the original was already missing and a “replica,” lighter-in-weight gun substituted? The serial number could have been copied by professionals who know their business.
THE “DAY OF RECKONING” FAST APPROACHES
At any rate, the day of reckoning is fast-approaching for Gen. Huntoon and the so-called “leadership” at Carlisle Barracks. “I am losing patience with them,” Honeycutt attorney John “Bulldog” Wells says.
“We were offered a deal to go away. They said we could have a replica of the Bradley firearm if we wanted. We don’t! Nothing less than the original is acceptable. Otherwise,” said the hard-charging Louisiana lawyer (licensed to practice in Penn.), “we’ll fight them in federal court.”
Another factor in the case is the refusal by Carlisle Barracks authorities to allow “Bulldog’s” top private investigator, a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army military police, to come on post and question key players in the “gun grab” case.
“What have they got to hide?” asked an exasperated John Wells. “They are only making things worse for themselves.”
Indeed they are.
