PREVENTING A COVER-UP”

“What a terrific job of reporting!” exclaimed an e-mail writer who works at Carlisle Barracks. “We first learned of the incident last week from your breaking story on MilitaryCorruption.com. Then it appeared right away in the local papers. When we saw WGAL-TV’s mobile unit outside the gate, we realized the tremendous power you have to put the spotlight on wrongdoing. No way was the Command going to be able to cover this one up – not with your lead story and those headlines. Congratulations.”

That was just one of the many “kudos” – amid a few “brickbats” from “the lunatic fringe” – that came to us after we exposed the recent arrest of a prominent colonel on post who allegedly threatened to “KILL” a spurned girlfriend and her dog!

Col. Alan C. Cate, the former director of the Army Heritage and Education Center, was arrested by the Pennsylvania State Police after a woman called 911 to report she’d been “assaulted” and “threatened” by the former Army Ranger.

The police report revealed Cate and the unidentified woman from Florida had consumed several drinks at his South Middleton Township home when an argument erupted.

SOME DRINKS, THEN AN “ASSAULT”

The “victim” said Cate announced he was “dating other women” and was, in effect, dumping her. The 50 year-old woman claimed the colonel knocked her to the ground, put his hands around her throat and threatened her life and that of her pet dog. The female managed to break free of the “assault” and ran to a telephone to call the cops.

Since our first story ran, further alleged “details” of the accused colonel’s private (romantic) life have come to our attention, [can you spell R-O-T-C?] - but we have decided to wait and see what charges Cate faces from the Army CID before revealing additional information.

MORE REACTION FROM OUR READERS

“Huntoon really blew it when he allowed Cate to come to work the next Monday, even though women [both military and civilian] who work here would’ve been upset had they known someone being investigated for violence against a female was walking among us as if nothing had happened,” said one frightened lady staffer at the AWC.

“You guys prevented a cover-up for sure,” said a male employee who is married to a Barracks worker. “Usually they’re able to protect bird colonels from punishment, but in this case, you put the story up in headlines and hundreds of people on post read it. The Commandant was forced to act. He had no choice.”

Our CI’s (confidential informants) from all over Carlisle Barracks forwarded copies of the brief and “sanitized” BANNER version of events to us right away. We were incredulous that no mention was made as to the “gender” of the alleged victim.

“They’re trying to soft pedal this incident, but it won’t work,” said a friendly NCO. “Everyone is asking themselfs (sic) what other officers in positions of power have kinky or scandalous backgrounds that we don’t know about yet?”

“BUMBLING BUCHER” SLOW TO RESPOND

One brass hat who came in for (even more) criticism from our friends in the civilian news media, is LTC Merideth “Bumbling” Bucher, the fast-track, former Pentagon flack, who got in so much trouble a few months back for her dumb statements trying to justify the ill-fated and illegal (violation of First Amendment) attempt by Barracks officials to censor and shut down access to MilitaryCorruption.com from the post computer system.

Apparently the obnoxious light colonel wasn’t readily available to reporters when news of the arrest leaked out. Lack of a basic DINFOS diploma may have caused our favorite female “field-grade” to drop the ball once again.

Merideth baby, here’s a hint and some free advice for you from a real journalist. “Always get out in front of a bad news story as soon as possible. Be sure of your facts, but don’t even “look like” you’re “stonewalling or delaying.” That destroys your credibility with the civilian media, and you can’t control or easily manipulate them! It also makes your boss – especially an indulgent one like Huntoon – look absolutely foolish.

Trying to ban a web site because you don’t like the truth we print came back to haunt the so-called “leadership” at Carlisle Barracks. All they accomplished by their heavy-handed tactics was to greatly increase our readership and give us millions of dollars in free and favorable publicity. Thanks!

PANICKING UNDER PRESSURE

It didn’t help the brass that we found out, at the same time we were being banned, PORNOGRAPHY was still accessible on certain post computers. Col. Mike “NO COMBAT” Colpo screamed like a stuck pig when we confronted him with that piece of information in a (legally) tape-recorded telephone conversation.

“That’s none of your business!” he shouted with indignation. What he should have said – if he’d had his head screwed on right and didn’t panic under fire – was: “We are addressing the problem.” But the controversial “chAIRBORNE Ranger” foolishly underestimated our ability to know what was going on all around him. Our CI’s “eyes and ears” are “everywhere,” Mikey. You should know that by now!

One would think the well-publicized murder of a colonel’s wife in 2002 – in that case, the woman caught her LTC hubby “ogling” porn on the PC in their quarters – would have spurred the Command to preventive measures to make sure such filth wasn’t continuing to filter in on post.

A “SANITIZED” ACCOUNT

The BANNER is able to leave out key details of the Cate incident because they function at the pleasure of embattled Commandant, Gen. David Huntoon. But Barracks workers and military members know the place to go for ALL the news – remember our first in the nation coverage of the Bartlett murder case when networks and newspapers came to us for the latest developments? – is MilitaryCorruption.com.

The pen is indeed “mightier than the sword,” whether it is a sword of oppression and censorship or wielded as a weapon to keep underlings in line and prevent the real facts from emerging into the daylight of truth.

A more honest account of the latest scandal to hit Carlisle Barracks would be very much welcomed by the workforce. For example, in light of his (matter of record) arrest, has Col. Cate’s security clearance been suspended, as has happened to others – both guilty and innocent? Will Gen. Huntoon hold a meeting to discuss with female workers the steps he has taken to ensure that women on Carlisle Barracks need not fear violence from male officers, no matter what rank they may be?

The standard operating procedure of “circle the wagons” and clamping a lid on information won’t work in this case. The Pentagon is sure to be watching to see how Huntoon and his right-hand man, Col. Mike “NO COMBAT” Colpo, handle this latest crisis at Carlisle Barracks.
