Either Charles Coughlin is what he claims to be - a 911 "hero" who went back into the burning Pentagon to help save others - or he's a lying dirt bag who scammed $330,000 out of the Victims Compensation Fund.
So far, the feds have been unsuccessful in pinning the rap on him.
This week, Coughlin went on trial for the third time, accused of making a false claim and "theft of public money." Previous charges - he was found not guilty of mail fraud - and other criminal counts were dropped in the wake of two mistrials.
IF AT FIRST YOU DON'T SUCCEED,
TRY, TRY AGAIN - THE FEDS
In the first trial, back in 2009, Coughlin's wife Sabrina was charged with aiding her husband in the alleged rip-off, but since then, authorities gave up on convicting her and set their sights on the 51 year-old retired Navy commander.
Someone is lying here. And since Watergate, Americans know their own government is just as capable of criminal behavior as crooks themselves.
If Coughlin is the brave guy he portrays himself, a terrible injustice has been done this man. Like former Labor Secretary Ray Donovan once said after being cleared of phony charges he was a mobster: "Where do I go to get my reputation back?"
TURNED DOWN $60K, EVENTUALLY GOT 300 GRAND
The Maryland man, who has an impeccable military record - Naval Academy graduate - received the large settlement from the federal fund set up to aid victims of 911. Originally offered $60,000, Coughlin said "no way," and held out until he got more than five times that amount.
The 21-year Navy veteran said he hurt his neck and banged his head in smoke-filled Pentagon corridors as he allegedly searched for other survivors. For his actions that day, Coughlin was awarded a Purple Heart and Meritorious Service Medal.
Eyebrows were raised when Coughlin ran in the New York City Marathon just two months after 911. He was also photographed playing lacrosse and basketball, two activities that seemed to belie his claims of "disabling" injury.
Attorney John Bourgois concedes his client did run in the grueling race, but claims the retired Naval officer "could barely finish" the exhausting event because he "ran hurt." As for playing lacrosse and basketball, the barrister said Coughlin's ability to participate in both sports activities was severely hindered by his physical injuries and he could achieve only a shadow of his former high performance due to 9/11 "injuries."
[EDITOR'S NOTE: We at MilitaryCorruption.com are preparing a major article on the infamous Maj. (P) Jill Metzger-Mayo to mark the fifth anniversary of her so-called "abduction" in Kyrgyzstan. We will be focusing in on her specious 100% "disability" rating for three years, during which time, she arrogantly ran in not only the Air Force Marathon, but Marine Corps Marathon and other such events, besides.
If Coughlin eventually goes to jail for fraud and obtaining a large amount of money under false pretenses, we wonder what would happen if Jill is someday found guilty of the same thing? What would happen to her and her chief protector, the "bloat-faced bully," Air Force Gen. Gary North?]
