"MAN OVERBOARD" OFF FAST-ATTACK SUB USS
More bad news from the USS Oklahoma.
Earlier this year, we reported the skipper, CMDR Mike Conner, was made to walk the plank. Despite repeated queries, we never were given the exact reason the three-striper was ousted. He just left, and life went on as usual until recently, when the bespectacled chief of the boat was also axed.
CMC Joseph Decker, described as "a POS" by several sailors who sent in e-mails, was fired July 27 for what we are told was "ineffective leadership." At least it wasn't for "misconduct," the flak said. That may provide a little comfort, although it isn't ever a good thing to be regarded by some as a goofball, promoted beyond your capabilities.
WHAT'S GOING ON HERE?
The master chief machinist's mate was the top enlisted member on the Oklahoma since April of last year. He has been reassigned to a desk job with Squadron 15 at Naval Station Guam. Senior Chief Brandon K. Edmiston from Sub Squadron 11 takes over as chief of boat.
It was CMDR Patrick Friedman, skipper of SSN 723, who "pulled the trigger" on Decker.
Is the Oklahoma jinxed? So far, the skipper and COB have been relieved. If the X.O. gets the boot, then we will know there is a very serious problem aboard the Los Angeles-class submarine.
