COL David Buckingham's long military career - he's an ROTC grad of Penn State, Class of 1987 - may have come to an ignominious end.

The bird colonel, who holds a Masters Degree in International Relations from Cambridge University, has been suspended "for conduct, pending completion of an on-going investigation," the Army has confirmed to our friends at STARS & STRIPES.

It was LT GEN Donald Campbell, commander of U.S. Army Europe, that issued the suspension order

AN ALCOHOL-RELATED OFFENSE?

While nothing more is being said for the record, "unofficial sources" tell us the garrison commander at Vicenzia, Italy was allegedly involved in some sort of altercation involving alcohol and the military police.

One report said local cops - the Carabinieri - were involved, thus making the rumored incident all the more sticky.

James Walls, a civilian and the Garrison's deputy commander, assumes the top spot while Buckingham is under investigation.

The 47 year-old senior officer, prior to coming to Italy in 2011, was G3 Director of Operations for U.S. Army Africa. Buckingham is a combat veteran, having served with the 82nd Airborne in Afghanistan.
