Is there something "in the water" at the U.S. Army garrison in Vicenza, Italy? Or is it just all that booze?

The latest commander to be fired there is COL David Buckingham. The ROTC grad from Penn State and 82nd Airborne veteran (with service in Afghanistan), is said to have been involved in an alcohol-fueled dispute with military police and the Italian Carabinieri during a July 4 holiday incident at Caserna Erbele.

The bird colonel had been suspended earlier, while under investigation. Now he's been officially relieved of duty.

After all the bad publicity from creepy skinhead COL James Johnson (see related stories box below), you'd think the Pentagon would be more careful who they send to Vicenza.

ANOTHER PUBLIC-RELATIONS DISASTER
FOR ARMY'S VICENZA GARRISON

The Italian news media had a field day reporting the "misconduct" of the American colonel.

It's no mystery why USAREUR boss, LT GEN Donald Campbell pulled the trigger on Buckingham, saying through a flak that he'd "lost confidence" in the colonel's "ability to command."

This isn't official, but you can place a safe bet with your bookie that the brawling bird colonel is busy working on his retirement papers right now. He's a 26-year Army veteran.

James Walls, Vicenza Garrison's civilian deputy commander, will continue in the top spot until the Army can bring in a new colonel. Hopefully this one won't follow in the footsteps of the disgraced Johnson and Buckingham.
