They seemed like the perfect couple. Lt. Col. Don Mahoney was the much-respected maintenance commander in the close-knit Montana Air National Guard. His attractive wife, Shelly, was beloved as a caring and highly-competent fourth grade school teacher at Mountain View Elementary School. But sources say, just under the surface, trouble was brewing. And on the night of Nov. 11, police called to the house by a family relative, were greeted by a horrible sight.

Sprawled in the bedroom of their Great Falls, Mont. home were the bodies of Mahoney and his wife. Both had been shot at close range and both were dead.

"We can't comment in detail because the case is still under investigation," a police spokesman said. But MilitaryCorruption.com's sources on the ground and within the Guard tell us the couple likely died as a result of a "murder-suicide."

"Don had a hair-trigger temper," said a source, who wishes to remain anonymous. "Something must have snapped, and this was the result," the colleague said.

SHOCK AND DISBELIEF FROM FRIENDS OF GUNSHOT VICTIMS

Mahoney had served as an Army Ranger and Great Falls police officer prior to joining the Montana Guard more than 20 years ago. If domestic strife was indeed the cause of the shooting deaths, neighbors and friends were unaware of any family problems.

"I am absolutely stunned," said a fellow officer. "Don and Shelly seemed to be happy whenever I saw them," he said.

Left behind are three children who, thankfully, weren't home when the double deaths took place. They are being cared for by relatives. The prayers of the entire community and those of us here at MilitaryCorruption.com go out to them.
