MIDSHIPMAN ON BALLISTIC-MISSLE SUB
"INAPPROPRIATE RELATIONSHIP" JUST THE
FIRST OF MANY IN WAKE OF NAVY'S DECISION
LAST DEC. TO ASSIGN FEMALES TO SUBMARINES

Well, it had to happen sooner or later. We knew, when the Navy started assigning females to it's submarines at sea, it was only a matter of time before males and females being in close proximity would result in big trouble.

The first case of this we know of, has now occurred on the Bangor, Wash. based ballistic missile sub Nebraska.

A chief of boat who should have known better, David Turley, has gotten himself fired for what investigators call an "inappropriate relationship" with a young female midshipman from the U.S. Naval Academy.

Her name, of course, will not be revealed, and we are quite sure in the final analysis, no punishment or disciplinary action of any kind will be meted out to the would-be naval officer.

MANY YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN SILENT SERVICE NOW WASTED

A native of Garronville, Nev., the top-ranking enlisted man aboard the Nebraska, is 20 years older than his "victim," and if he is guilty of what they say, he stupidly has brought to an end an otherwise sterling career that began back in 1991.

Most of Turley's two decades in the Navy has been spent at sea in at least eight submarines. The knowledge and experience he gained, and now the military service will lose once he puts in his papers and goes, is a loss for the taxpayers.

Perhaps the social engineers in the Pentagon, who had to know putting women on submarines could result in such problems, will now rethink their mistake. But likely, they will not, and the ages-old, male-female interactions that take place when temptation is just around the corner (or compartment), will continue at great cost to all involved.
