JAMES MATTINGLY RELEASED ON BOND
It's been a bad month for the Navy. September brought disgrace and ruin to three Naval officers, including two chaplains.
The most sensational case involves Pentecostal chaplain Lt. Shane Dillman, accused or rape and numerous other charges. He was recommended for court martial, and it's up to the convening authority, Rear Admiral John W. Goodwin of Naval AIr Force Atlantic, to decide whether or not to accept the recommendation.
Last July, at an Article 32 hearing, several enlisted females testified against the seemingly strait-laced preacher, accusing him of forcing sex on them after several "dates."
Defense attorney Charles Gittins accused the women of "consensual sex" and "lying" about the bedroom romps. In addition to the rape charge, Dillman, 35, was hit with fraternization, adultery, and harassment raps in addition to the accusation he "threatened" one of his "victims."
THE CHAPLAIN STOLE BIG BUCKS -
ADMITS UNLAWFUL RECEIPT OF $172K IN PAY
Lt. Cdr. Rudolph Dimery was a pious man of God. But then he got greedy.
When the Navy Reserve chaplain from Pasadena, Calif. finished up his active-duty stint in March of 2003, the paychecks still kept rolling in. And Rudy was more than happy to cash them.
The 50 year-old clergyman collected active duty pay and allowances for housing and subsistence until March of 2005, two years later.
It was an accounting snafu. Dimery knew that, but didn't say a word. He pocketed some $172, 229 he wasn't entitled to and the government wants it back.
The corrupt chaplain admitted to one count of theft of government funds and faces up to ten years in the slammer and a $250,000 fine.when he is sentenced on February 4.
NAVY COMMANDER AT PEARL HARBOR ADMITS HAVING CHILD PORN
Cdr. James Mattingly, 38, had a spotless career. The surface warfare officer who joined the Navy in 1991, was well-regarded and his colleagues couldn't conceive the soft-spoken career Naval officer was a child porn nut.
"I'm a hopeless addict," the commander said to arresting officers after they kicked in the door of his Waikiki home and grabbed up his porn stash.
Mattingly tried to toss his computer out the window when the cops first arrived, but it was too late. Investigators "grabbed up" all the proof they needed.
So sick is the much-decorated officer, that despite a court order to "stay away" from child pornography, Mattingly was caught ogling the filth on a relative's PC.
"I just can't help myself," Mattingly wailed as the cops slapped on the cuffs.
His career destroyed, and facing a long stretch in the pen, Mattingly remains free on $25,000 bail. He will be sentenced in federal court Jan 20.
