SGM VIRGIL EBRECHTWhat made him do it? SGM Virgil Ebrecht had it made.

The 28-year Army veteran was assigned to a soft job at Colorado Springs. He was top-ranker at the U.S. Army's Space Battalion on Peterson AFB.

But all that came crashing down around his ears in August when he pleaded guilty to "abusive sexual contact" with a child. A military judge busted him down to SPC E-4 and sentenced the Missouri native to spend six months behind bars.

SOME CONFUSION AS TO FINAL PENALTY

Army flaks are short on details, but we guess the reduction stopping at the rank it did, may have something to do with alleviating possible hardship for Ebrecht's wife and family.

Almost certainly, he will leave the Army at the end of his confinement. Whether he will receive retirement pay based upon the loss of stripes, is an open question. We would welcome input from Army JAGS who have an idea on just what exactly went down here.

Ebrecht originally faced 30 months in the lock-up, but a plea agreement cut that to 180 days.

A STRANGE TWIST TO THIS STORY

Not many of our readers will have much sympathy for an E-9 getting in a mess like this.

However, even those of us with the hardest of hearts have to take into some consideration the sergeant major is said to have lost a son in combat in Afghanistan.

The irony is, the young man, a Marine infantryman, died in a "green on blue attack." His killer was one of our Afghan "allies," and young Ebrecht was slain trying to protect a young boy from sexual assault by Afghan perverts.
