He was cornered. The cops had converged on woods in Warwick Township, Pa., a suburb of Philadelphia.
CPT Leonard Egland had killed four people already and now - with one squeeze of the trigger - was about to claim a fifth victim - himself.
The 37 year-old Fort Lee officer, a veteran of combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, snapped when Carrie, his beautiful blonde wife, demanded a divorce.
Egland, a "Mustang officer," with 18 years military service, began his killing spree the weekend Hurricane Irene blasted her way from the Carolinas to Maine.
EVEN THE BOYFRIEND'S YOUNG SON
CUT DOWN IN A HAIL OF BULLETS
The captain shot to death Carrie and her boyfriend, Scott Alred, 40. Scott's seven year-old son was also wasted. A bullet to the head. In the wrong place, at the wrong time. That was in Virginia.
Then Egland drove up to the Philadelphia suburbs and broke into his mother-in-law's house. One shot, one kill. 66 year-old Barbara Reuhl died instantly as she sat in her living room easy chair.
By then, police had discovered the other bodies and were hot on Egland's trail.
About a hundred yards behind a gas station in a wooded area, the troubled captain decided to end it all. He did. And saved taxpayers a pile of dough.
