He lived a life of luxury, but it didn't last for long.

Now the BMW, wife's Mercedes, luxury home in California, and all the proceeds from a criminal enterprise as a contract officer in Iraq have been forfeited to the feds.

Capt. Eric Schmidt, USMC, was truly "rotten to the Corps."

GREED GOT THE BEST OF THIS MARINE CONTRACT OFFICER

This Marine officer let greed get the best of him as he saw a chance to scam easy money, even if it meant inflating supply contracts for his fellow Jarheads and cheating them in a theater of war.

Schmidt is going away for six years. After cutting a plea bargain deal, he will report to the slammer, a federal pen, in mid-April. His estranged wife, Janet, admittedly part of the money scheme, also pleaded guilty to one count of failing to report income from the wrongdoing. She faces up to three years in prison and is scheduled to be sentenced March 7th.

Her husband pleaded guilty to wire fraud and filing fraudulent tax returns. He must also repay the $1.7 million stolen.

E-MAILS SHOW SCHMIDT "EXCITED" ABOUT
PROSPECT OF SPENDING ILL-GOTTEN GAINS

The corrupt officer boasted of his plans for the future in e-mails sent to his wife while he served on deployment in Iraq in 2008 with the 1st Marine Division.

"It makes me excited to just think about it . . . hope we get to go new house hunting soon," he wrote. The communications were among those placed in evidence by federal prosecutors.

Schmidt's taste for the high life caused him to betray his oath as an officer as well as loyalty to his fellow Marines. When the feds raided Schmidt's expensive home in a gated community of Murieta, Calif., they found $40,000 in greenbacks lying around the house "like so much play money."
