SUB SKIPPER GETS SACKED AFTER SIX MONTHS
ON THE JOB - CMDR STEVEN EVERHART WALKS THE
PLANK - RELIEVED AS COMMANDER OF THE USS
PENNSYLVANIA - NO REASON GIVEN OTHER THAN
USUAL BOILERPLATE ABOUT "LOSS OF CONFIDENCE
IN HIS ABILITY TO LEAD" - EVERHART HAD BEEN XO
ON THE BALLISTIC MISSILE SUB FROM 2012-2014

CMDR STEVEN EVERHARTIt wasn't that long ago that CMDR Steven Everhart's Naval career was on the rise.  The 40 year-old graduate of Montana State University was aide to an admiral at Submarine Group Nine.  Four stripes on his sleeve was almost in sight.  But what a difference a few years makes.

Last week Everhart was relieved as skipper of the USS Pennsylvania by CAPT Mark Schmall, boss of Sub Squadron 7.  No reason given, other than the usual boilerplate about "loss of confidence in the commander's ability to lead."  So we'll have to wait until  we know if he got in trouble over an operational issue, or it is sex-related.

In our Related Stories below, you will see how other submarine skippers ended their careers.  We picked out five cases we have covered in the last year or so.  If we went back to the time MilitaryCorruption.com went online, we'd need a whole lot more space just to publish the links.

A VERY BRIEF TENURE AS SKIPPER

We don't know much about Everhart, other than he hails from Great Falls, Montana and graduated from Navy OCS.

He took command of the Ohio-class undersea boat in January.  CMDR Everhart had been XO on the sub between 2012 and 2014.  His relief in June might set some sort of record for a commanding officer getting fired but fast.  At least in the Silent Service.

Everhart has been reassigned to the staff of Submarine Group 9 and CAPT Chad Hennings, Squadron 17's deputy commander, has assumed command of the Bangor, Wash.- based ballistic missile boat until a permanent replacement is found.
