We have just two words to say to Marine Sgt. Gary Stein: Terry Lakin.
Lakin was the Army flight surgeon and light colonel who refused to deploy to Afghanistan (Lakin had previously served in combat in Iraq) because he claimed Obama's birth certificate was phony, thus Barrack Hussein Obama ineligible to be commander-in-chief.
We were critical of Lakin at the time for letting himself be used by some political opportunists who apparently didn't impress upon the good doctor that his life and career would be ruined once he was convicted at court martial. At the very end of his ordeal, Lakin tearfully pleaded for mercy, but the dye was cast. The Obama administration wanted him punished and that's what happened.
Lakin (see related stories box below) was busted, shipped off to prison, kicked out of the military and professionally ruined. Disobeying the deployment order played right into his enemy's hands. But when the flight surgeon finally realized that, it was too late.
MARINE NON-COM NEEDS TO BE VERY CAREFUL
Let's hope that Marine NCO Stein doesn't suffer a similar fate. The Camp Pendleton-based sergeant has eight years invested in the Corps. It would be a shame to lose that.
Stein writes a blog: Armed Force Tea Party Patriots. He appears to be thoroughly sincere and not a nut or publicity seeker. But he just might be naive.
When he announced on FACEBOOK he wouldn't follow orders from President Obama, his superiors rightfully counseled him. Then, Stein softened his stance and said he wouldn't follow "unlawful orders." He declared he "respects the office of the President" while disagreeing with Obama's "policies."
This puts him in a very tough spot, as it does his commanding officers. They've told Stein he has a right to his views, but he must not create the impression he's speaking in any official capacity as a Marine. That's a fine line to walk, and we hope the sergeant won't self-destruct in the process.
