FORT BRAGG, N.C. (MCC) -- He dodged a bullet.

Embattled Army GEN Jeffrey Sinclair has now survived more than enemy fire on the battlefield. Thursday, he was able to walk out of the courtroom here a free man.

Military Judge (COL) James Pohl fined the horny former paratroop commander $20,000 (a deduction of $5000 in pay over a four month span). But the one-star general didn't get any prison time.

It was a stunning defeat for the attack dog JAGs who at one time hoped to deprive Sinclair of his retirement pension and put him away behind the walls of the Leavenworth DB for the rest of his life.

AT LEAST HELIXON SHOWED SOME HONOR

The turning point in the court-martial came before proceedings began. An honest and honorable man, LTC Will Helixon, realized that the prosecution's star witness was a liar and unreliable. The JAG openly expressed his doubts about her veracity, and that got him bounced off the team.

Suddenly his buddies in the fight to destroy Sinclair turned on him with a viciousness that made even the proverbial "thrown under the bus" appear to be a "love tap" instead.

Helixon - at the time the lead prosecutor in the case - had the temerity to tell the truth and was immediately labeled a "drunk, unfit for duty," and deemed "mentally unstable." Gee, do you think the prosecution didn't appreciate the colonel upsetting their plans to "nuke" GEN Sinclair?

VENGEFUL EX-MISTRESS FAILED IN "VICTIM" ROLE

The real blame for the "gang that couldn't shoot straight's" massive melt-down can be attributed to the vengeful 34 year-old captain who wanted to get even with
her former lover and perhaps pin on some major's oak leaves in the process.

But getting caught committing perjury time and again - the Army had given her "immunity" for her adultery etc. - cast serious doubt on her credibility as the star witness.

Her whining about "he only used me for sex" overlooked the three year affair where LITTLE BO PEEP was perfectly happy to be a flag officer's mistress as long as he (in her dreams) divorced his wife and married her.

And her specious claim that Sinclair threatened to KILL her and her family was shot to hell when it was revealed the "victim" continued sending sexually-explicit love notes and e-mails to the general well after the date of the alleged death threat. Oops!

A GUN, DOBERMAN AND "THE WATERWORKS"

The accuser's testimony and feigned tears in the witness box weren't helped any by the claim being dumped by the general caused her not to "trust" anyone anymore. The scorned "other woman" tried for sympathy when she played the "victim" card, telling of sleeping with a loaded gun nearby and a Doberman dog at her feet. Yeah, right.

She would have ditched that dog and gun fast and smiled for the TV cameras if she'd succeeded is sending a general to prison. The army would have made her their poster girl for fighting sexual assault in the ranks, and she'd have been perfectly content to soak up the accolades.

Alas, no Joan of Arc is she.

Now, BO PEEP will find herself shunned if she stays in the Army. Her future is anything but bright. Maybe she can find some work over at MSNBC. That'd be a good fit for one of her "truthfulness."

SINCLAIR SOON TO BE A LIGHT COLONEL AGAIN

He may have escaped being put behind bars, but Sinclair won't be retiring in grade. You can take this to the bank. He'll get a pension, but as a lieutenant colonel, the last rank (according to regulation) that he served "satisfactorily" in.

That bust in rank will cost the former deputy commander of the 82nd Airborne Division beaucoup bucks over a lifetime. One source has the losses tagged at over $800,000.

Add in all the money he spent on a cracker-jack civilian defense team that succeeded in keeping his ass out of prison, while saving his pension and benefits for his family, and he'll be paying off the bill for years to come.

There's one good way to recoup his expenses. We are sure GEN Sinclair knows where any bodies are buried at the Pentagon and elsewhere. A best-selling book about his contemporaries and stories of some of the shameful double-dealing he saw in his 27 years of Army service would make very interesting reading indeed.

REMF's and little politicians and perfumed princes like the loathsome GEN David ("I committed adultery") Petraeus, bully-boy GEN Ray Odierno, and that wizened little elf and Obama butt-kisser, GEN Martin Dempsey, could provide some entertainment when exposed in the proper light.
