Outrageous? You bet! Rank, however, does have it privileges, and not just here in the United States.
The general who should have gone to prison for a good, long time isn't an American. He's retired French Gen. Raymond Germanos, who recently got - not a slap-on-the-wrist for his crimes - but a "tap-on-the-wrist" instead.
Onetime military spokesman for France during the 1990-91 Gulf War, the 68 year-old pervert complained to the court in Paris what he did was really quite innocent. You see, the general was just "consulting" (his word) the vile images on videos such as "Baby Love" and "Lolita" to - get this - understand just how depraved child pornography can be. That he did that, according to INTERPOL, for four years, between 2004 and when he was caught in 2008, just shows his "great interest" in the subject.
NO PUNISHMENT AT ALL FOR PERVERT GENERAL OFFICER
"These images are unspeakable . . . unbearable," Judge Marie-Francoise Guidolin huffed. Then she turned the dirty brass hat loose.
Germanos received a ten-month prison sentence, all of it suspended, and a "symbolic" fine of one Euro, less than two bucks in American currency. The three child-protection agencies who'd filed suit in his case in France were not amused.
High rank and a record of no prior offenses helped Germanos skip out the door as free as a bird. The man who'd downloaded over 3000 child porn images, some of tots as young as six months old, laughed to himself all the way to the nearest bar.
The senior officer, who retired from the French Army in 2002, will continue to receive his hefty pension checks uninterrupted.
