GEN. JAMES GRAZIOPLENE Ret'dThis promises to be one of the most sensational military trials in the last 50 years.  How often does a flag officer and West Point (Class of 1972) graduate face life in prison, convicted of rape?  Even more unusual, is the alleged crime is molesting and raping a female since the age of three?

All bets are off whether the Pentagon will allow full access to the media of what promises to be a 68 year-old retired general squaring off against a member of his own family.  James Grazioplene has been accused of committing these acts at various location - Forts Bragg, Leavenworth and at bases in Germany.

The "victim" claims the sexual assaults and molestation began when she was only three years old and lasted until she reached age 18., Apparently, there are no witnesses to this, so we have a case here of "she said/he said" with the 800 lb. gorilla sitting in the front room with a sign hanging around it's neck: political pressure. Grazioplene is sure to be the number one target of fire-breathing Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.).

HIGH STAKES FOR BOTH SIDES

Since 1986, there has been no statute of limitations in the military on the crime of rape. The "victim" in this case, now 46, has contradicted herself in various accounts of what happened, but we are told that prosecutors will explain that as the result of her telling various amounts of her story to different people "depending on her level of trust" with them.

It is possible the defense team will question the mental stability of the accuser and also point out she may have been influenced by others to "recall" molestation and assaults that only took place in the woman's mind.

The stakes couldn't be higher for Grazioplene or the Pentagon.  They have to go all-out for a conviction, as anything less would bring down the wrath of certain politicians on the top brass.  As for the general, if convicted, at his age, he likely would die before he can get out from behind bars.
