When's the last time you heard of the top enlisted man at any major military installation being charged with anything, much less taken to court-martial? Right.
But Chief Master Sgt. William Gurney, senior NCO at Wright-Pat's Air Force Material Command in Dayton, Ohio, is about to see his 27-year career come crashing down around his ears.
By the time you read these words, closing arguments at the trial, held at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, will have concluded and the case gone to a six-man officer jury. It looks pretty grim for Gurney.
LIKE THE "ENERGIZER BUNNY," HE JUST
KEPT GOING . . . AND GOING . . . AND GOING
The man is a virtual sex-machine. He was charged with forcing relations on numerous enlisted females; arranging for transfers to make them physically available for him; and even, in one instance, participating in a sexual romp with both a married female and his wife, Tracie.
Gurney's escapades took place in many locations, even his office on base.
Now "lover-boy" is paying the price for his being a lothario. He faces up to 14 years in prison, a dishonorable discharge, loss of all military pay and benefits, his retirement pension, and reduction to the lowest rank - airman basic. One might say Gurney dug his own grave with his . . . well, you get the picture.
PLEADS GUILTY TO MOST CHARGES AGAINST HIM
Trying to soften the sentence, the top enlisted man pleaded guilty to 13 of 18 counts against him, which include adultery, indecent conduct, dereliction of duty and misuse of government communications equipment.
He's trying to beat back five other charges, among them - misusing his position to arrange transfers, so targeted females would be physically available to him for sex; forcing unwanted attentions on female airmen; and sexual contact with a female without her permission.
"I was caught up in a cycle of sin," said an apparently repentant chief master sergeant. "I have failed as both a husband and an airman."
A SOLID CASE - CONVICTION A LIKELIHOOD
The OSI was able to build up quite a case against Gurney. They had him by the short hairs with numerous nude pix of the handsome, physically fit E-9. He used govt. cell phones and equipment to transmit the risqué images to his favorite females. Some were impressed by his abundant appendage, others were decidedly not.
You have to wonder why a man in his position would risk all for a few moments of fleeting pleasure? Gurney can only hope the jury will go easy on him. Be watching MilitaryCorruption.com, dear readers, for the court-martial verdict and sentence. It will be coming soon.
Gurney must have thought his high enlisted rank and the double standard of justice presently existing in today's Jill Metzger/AKA Jill Mayo Air Force, would shield him from any punishment. He was wrong.
