CITY COURT - ALL FOR OBSESSION OF A WOMAN
He had his whole future in front of him. An Air Force Academy graduate (Class of 1997) and B-52 bomber pilot stationed at Barksdale AFB in Louisiana, Capt. John Perrys was due for promotion to major and a brilliant military career. That was in 2005.
Then he met gorgeous Caroline Lister, and for a while, the romance bloomed. But soon the girlfriend grew wary of Perrys and his smothering ways. She ended the relationship. And that's when the now 34 year-old flyer "flipped out."
The Air Force officer plotted revenge. According to court papers, he drove to Lister's home, the Florida house owned by her step-father, Judge Fred Witton. Wearing a mask and bulletproof vest, Perrys quietly disabled the brake lines on his former girlfriend's car, then slipped into the house and up the stairs to the bathroom. There, he assaulted Caroline in the shower with a stun gun.
Her screams alerted Witton, who, wielding a shotgun, chased Perrys out of the house. Before the bumbling ex-romeo could speed away, the judge copied down his license plate number and alerted cops.
CAUGHT BACK AT THE AIR BASE
When a frantic Perrys showed up at nearby Patrick AFB, where he was on TDY, the Air Police were ready for him. In the trunk of his car, they found the mask, rope and stun gun and took the officer into custody. He was soon turned over to civilian authorities.
Thus began a bizarre five-year odyssey with changes of venue, and at one point, the contention by his defense attorney that Perry was insane and "drooling on himself," all while the former captain still had not been brought to trial. That was to finally change this month (March 2010), when he was set to finally go before a jury in Panama City. Fla., the home of some of the most beautiful but crafty "trophy wives" in the country. Destin is a close second.
Perrys wasn't so crazy that he didn't know accepting a "plea bargain deal" from the prosecutor was the best way to go. Getting credit for his five years of incarceration, he pled no contest to all charges - burglary of a dwelling while armed, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and misdemeanor criminal mischief (cutting the car brake lines) - and agreed to go away for five more years, this time to a state prison.
The judge ordered Perrys to pay a $25,000 fine and be placed on probation for at least 30 years after his release from prison.
Things ended a lot better for beautiful Caroline Lister. She is now married and a happy mom in central Florida. Perrys, hopefully, is only a bad memory now.
