TRIAL BEGINS IN PHILIPPINES FOR TRANNY
The trial of a U.S. Marine, charged with killing a transsexual prostitute in the Philippines last year, opened this week in the Hall of Justice at Olongopo City.
Marine PFC Joseph Pemberton is charged with a particularly gruesome slaying. Local police say the then 19 year-old grunt became enraged when he discovered his "date" was really a guy, and killed the attractive tranny by shoving her head in a toilet bowl.
The cold-blooded killing has badly strained U.S.- Filipino relations at a time when the two longtime allies need to co-operate more than ever in fighting terrorism.
TWO WITNESSES PLACE PEMBERTON
Elias Gallamos, clerk at the Celzone Lodge, testified that he had rented Room # 1 to Pemberton and 26 year-old Jeffrey "Jennifer" Laude on October 11, 2014.
He swore under oath that he witnessed Pemberton hastily depart the premises a short time later and, when Gallamos checked the room, he discovered Laude's nude body, her head jammed in the commode.
A second prosecution witness, Mark "Barbie" Gelviro, told the court she saw the Marine and her friend go in the room together, but only the American emerge. Gelviro also testified Laude was dead when she and Gallamos looked inside.
PFC Pemberton faces 40 years in prison if convicted. Prosecutor Emilie Fe De Los Santos told reporters the trial will resume on April 13.
