"TRANNY KILLER" CONVICTED IN PHILIPPINES
It was a brutal killing.
Marine L/Cpl. Joseph Pemberton told his pals he "freaked out" when the pretty, young Filipino sex worker he thought was a she, turned out to be a he. The then-19 year old Grunt had brought "Jennifer," AKA Jeffrey Laude, back to his seedy hotel room in Olongapo, Philippines, looking for a good time in the sack.
Instead of that, the enraged New Bedford, Mass. man strangled the petite prostitute and shoved her head into a toilet bowl until she drowned.
"I think I killed a he/she," he later blurted out to fellow Marines.
AVOIDS LONGER PRISON TERM
The vicious nature of the crime stirred up leftist demonstrators, who took advantage of the incident to protest against continued U.S.-Philippine military operations. Both countries have been longtime allies in the Pacific, despite several periods in the past 30 years when relations were strained, almost to the breaking point.
But tensions should ease, now that a Philippine court has convicted Pemberton of killing Laude. He's been sentenced to 6 to 12 years in prison. Since Pemberton was convicted of homicide, instead of murder, he escapes a much longer time behind bars. He gets credit for the year he has been held in custody since being arrested last October.
The Grunt must also compensate Laude's family in the amount of 4.6 million pesos, or approximately $100,000 in U.S. greenbacks.
