What's next? Military chaplains being ordered to officiate at gay weddings on pain of court-martial?
That possibility may not be far off in the wake of one of the most incredible grovelings we have ever seen by a senior officer at the altar of "political correctness."
The late, great Gen. George Patton indelicately once said, "Some politicians would wipe their ass with the American flag if they thought it would get them a few more votes."
The commanding officer at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Air Force Col. Brian Duffy, need not worry about getting promoted to flag rank now. He's just shown how far he will genuflect as a politically-correct wuss.
Here's what happened.
IKE COMMENT OFFENDS ATHIEST LEADER
Chaplain (Lt.Col.) Kenneth Reyes used a famous quote by former General of the Army and President of the United States Dwight D. Eisenhower in a column published in a base on-line newsletter.
Ike had said, in part . . . "I am delighted that our veterans are sponsoring a movement to increase our awareness of God in our daily lives. In battle, they learned a great truth, that there are no atheists in the foxholes."
That enraged Mr. Weinstein, who fired off an e-mail to Duffy accusing Chaplain Reyes of using "hate speech" and demanding that the colonel be "appropriately punished." .
PC COL DUFFY CAVES IN
It took Col. Duffy all of five hours to order the offending statement wiped off the base home page. He must have shaken in his booties when he wrote Weinstein back:
"We remain mindful of the governing instructions on the matter, and will work to avoid a recurrence."
What if an anti-Christian agitator demanded chaplains allow "666" (sign of the devil) and pentagrams be scrawled on the altars of military chapels? Are we that far off from seeing such a thing happen?
WOULD A MUSLIM CHAPLAIN BE TREATED THE SAME?
Let's look at this from another angle.
What if Chaplain Reyes was a Muslim chaplain - we have them now - and mentioned Allah in a way that offended some Christian "pressure group?"
Do you think Barack Hussein Obama's secretary of defense would rush to the side of that targeted clergy member? Yeah, right.
THE HONORABLE DUFFY
As for Col. Duffy, soon to be a PC general, if you go to the northern triangle of Times Square in New York City, between 45th and 47th streets, you will see an eight-ton, 50-foot high statute of another officer named Duffy.
Father Francis Patrick Duffy was a World War I hero who risked his life under fire to rescue the wounded and minister to his soldiers.
He would spin in his grave to see what has happened here. Obviously, the last names may be the same, but there is no relation between tremulous Col. Duffy and the Duffy whom we commemorate for his courage and dedication to God and country.
