SALUTE CHAPLAIN GORDON KLINGENSCHMITT
How many men have such courage of conviction that they would risk losing their military career and pension and benefits over a matter of principle? Damn few. Yet Navy LT Gordon Klingenschmitt paid that heavy price this week for refusing to compromise his faith.
The 39 year-old Air Force Academy graduate had plenty of enemies in the "good old boys" club of the Navy Chaplains Corps. Most of the Catholic priests there felt Klingenschmitt was "some sort of religious wacko" who needed to be reined in.
The officer's 18-day hunger strike in front of the White House to protest his being prevented from praying "in Jesus' name" irked the top Navy brass. They bided their time to strike, but now they have, and the chaplain has been involuntarily discharged.
We hope there is a church somewhere in America who will utilize Klingenschmitt's services.
"I'm obviously disappointed," the chaplain told MilitaryCorruption.com, " but I'd still do it all over again. I have to live with my conscience. I must stand up for what I believe."
