He took it like a man. Yes, he had to beg the court-martial jury at Ft. Meade, Md. for mercy on Wednesday. After all, Army flight surgeon LTC Terrence Lakin was facing prison and the loss of his career for making what many believe was a principled, albeit misguided, stand. But he didn't whimper as he became what some may now call him, a "political prisoner." Give him credit for that.
The judgment was harsh. Dismissal from the Army and six months in a military prison. After nearly 18 years of unblemished service, this much-needed Army doctor can now add his name to the roster of those who have been crushed when daring to question the legality of Barack Hussein Obama to be President of the United States and commander-in-chief.
The jury was out just five hours before rendering their verdict. The happiest person in the courtroom was CPT (soon to be MAJ) Philip J. O'Beirne, the JAG prosecutor, who demanded Lakin be locked up for a longer stretch. "Send them a message . . . write tomorrow's headline" he declared. Mocking the much-decorated military physician sitting a few feet away, the smarmy JAG spat out: "He knew exactly what he was doing, and he did it anyway!"
We hope the righteous O'Beirne doesn't end up like his fellow JAG, MAJ Dan Woolverton, the West Point grad recently busted for molesting his own infant son in a home-made porn production. Oh. JAGs never do any wrong? At least most of the time? OK. We stand corrected.
DENIED "DISCOVERY" AND SUPPORTING WITNESSES,
THE FIX WAS IN - LAKIN WAS FINISHED AT THE START
It's less than ten days before Christmas, and Col. Lakin's wife and three children won't be celebrating while the lucky captain counts up his "brownie points."
We were never in favor of Lakin making this kamikaze run (see related stories box below). We knew the deck would be stacked against him. And sure enough it was. The military court judge violated Lakin's right to due process by refusing him "discovery" and also shot down a request by a retired Army three-star general to testify on the colonel's behalf. After that, it was all over but the shouting. The flight surgeon was toast.
This result will probably put a halt to military members risking ruin by taking on Obama. As long as there are ambitious JAG prosecutors and sycophantic, genuflecting generals at the Pentagon, no one else will dare even mutter "The emperor has no clothes."
If there's any good news at all from the court-martial result, at least the final decision goes to Gen. Karl Horst. He can reduce the penalty. Also Lakin can appeal. We hope Horst is a man of honor and integrity and will resist the temptation to do what the White House wants - send a good and decent man to prison for what essentially are political reasons.
