CON-MAN "REV" AL SHARPTON - KEEP OUT!
For the first time in nearly 20 years, a full colonel in the Air Force will face court-martial on rape and other charges. If Samuel Lofton III is found guilty, he could get life imprisonment at the Leavenworth DB.
The former commander of the 82nd Training Group at Sheppard AFB in Texas feels he has been "set up" and questions the credibility of several of his accusers. One woman, who told the OSI she "threw" her torn-panty hose "in the colonel's face" after an alleged sexual encounter, admitted at the officer's Article 32 hearing she'd later written her "attacker" that she had "the deepest respect" for him.
At that time, Lofton was only being probed for financial mismanagement. The note included the phrase she was "praying" that the colonel would "weather the storm." Of course that was before investigators and others got to, we mean "interviewed," her and another female, who now yell rape.
IF HE DID IT, THE COLONEL SHOULD GO TO THE SLAMMER
If Lofton did "violate" these women, he deserves to get the book thrown at him. And even "life without parole" at the military prison in Kansas would be an appropriate penalty. The question is, did he do it? Did he force these women against their will to have sex with him?
The colonel is between a rock and a hard place regarding a number of financial irregularities that would probably have ended his career anyway.
But court-martialing a high-profile minority officer, Lofton is African-American, at a base where racial tensions are already bubbling under the surface, is a high-stakes move for the Air Force brass. Comparisons are sure to be made with other cases and the mainstream news media is sure to bring the trial a lot of unwanted publicity.
Even race-hustler, the "Rev." Al "Tawana Brawley" Sharpton, might try and get in to the act. If he even hints at bringing his road show to Sheppard AFB, Col. Lofton's defense team should tell him he and his posturing are very "unwelcome."
FINANCIAL IRREGULARITIES AND "GOOGLEY-EYED" GIRLS
What we do know of this case is that Lofton is in a jam for running up nearly $10,000 in unauthorized charges on his government travel card. Included on that tab was his children's school lunches, utility bills, airline tickets for relatives and even restaurant meals in town.
He also was nabbed for getting "reimbursed" for scheduled trips he never took. Allegedly the journeys weren't Air Force business, but for his own benefit - visiting his kids or even a girlfriend. No one disputes that Lofton had a way with women. A former secretary testified during the officer's Article 32 hearing that at least one of Lofton's "rape" victims "got all googly-eyed" whenever she was near the colonel and "sought excuses just to be around him."
If you are thinking what we are, dear reader, you'll agree it is not unknown for OSI "bully-boys" to "squeeze" someone they can prosecute on other charges to make false ones that would bolster an otherwise-shaky case. It's amazing what some people will do and the lies they will tell in order to keep themselves out of trouble.
We always try to be objective in cases like this because in the present "politically-correct" atmosphere in today's Air Force, justice often gets overlooked in the quest to get another courtroom conviction.
For example, the OSI was really reaching when they got one female to testify that Lofton made "suggestive" remarks to her and called her at home. But under cross-examination by one of the colonel's defense attorneys, she testified "at no time" was she "offended" or "felt like a victim."
A SENSATIONAL COURT-MARTIAL SURE TO STIR THE EMOTIONS
Trial is set to begin on June 19th. Lofton is only the fourth Air Force officer above the rank of major to go to court-martial in the past three years.
In light of that statistic, does anyone really think Gens. T. Michael Moseley or Gary North will ever have to answer for the disgraceful Maj. Jill Metzger cover-up? Is allowing pension-fraud on a so-called "diagnosis" of PTSD based upon a possible lie about being "kidnapped" an appropriate "consolation prize" for a spoiled and privileged officer - two-time Air Force Marathon winner - with plenty of connections? Like a retired colonel "daddy" and a young OSI agent husband?
When will the truth be known? No wonder morale in the Air Force has reached a new low.
