It's not every day an inspector general gets hit with criminal charges. And the IG in this case is a lieutenant colonel at Aviano Air Base in Italy.
James Wilkerson has been accused of "sexual assault" by an American female civilian employee who reported his alleged actions to the authorities.
An Article 32 preliminary hearing has been held and the married officer's court martial is slated to begin on base Oct. 26.
"VICTIM" SAID TO BE "SUBSTANTIALLY INCAPACITATED"
DURING ALLEGED SEXUAL ASSAULT, SOURCES SAY
Sources say Wilkerson supposedly "groped and fondled the breasts" of the unidentified woman March 24 in a hotel room in Piano, Italy. The town is a short distance from the U.S. Air Force facility at Aviano.
A spokesperson said the victim was "substantially incapable of appraising the nature of the sexual contact." That could mean she was drugged, but more likely was drunk at the time of the alleged attack.
"Sexual assault is unacceptable and will not be tolerated," said 31st F.W. commander, Brig. Gen. Scott Zobrisat.
Prior to Wilkerson getting the inspector general position, he was deputy commander of the wing. He has been reassigned to other duties pending completion of his court-martial later this year.
