In Charles Dickens' immortal "Tale of Two Cities," a ruthless Madame DeFarge looks up from her knitting just long enough to scream "OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!"
The blood-thirsty old battle axe sat by "La Guillotine" during the French Revolution in Paris squealing with delight every time the sharp blade lopped off another head - be it formerly attached to the guilty or innocent.
It's kind of like that now, in the latest frenzy over sexual assault in the military. We haven't seen such terror in the air since the Aberdeen Proving Grounds back in 1996.
We're glad the military - and some of the politicians - are taking this very real and widespread problem seriously. However, one must not lose perspective that not all accusations are true. A small percentage of those charged are actually "railroaded. Where is the "justice" for them?
IT COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE
A case in point is the sentencing this week of a Marine major who taught history at the Naval Academy in Annapolis.
Maj. Mark Thompson has some reason to celebrate. After all, he could have been sent to Leavenworth for life on a aggravated sexual assault and rape rap.
He was cleared of those more serious charges, but tagged for "indecent acts," disobeying an order, and that old stand-by, "conduct unbecoming an officer."
Thompson was sentenced to 60 days in jail, fined $2500 a month and will face an officer retention board when he gets out of the slammer.
A heavy price to pay for an afternoon of consensual frolic with two female midshipmen who, at the very least, have shown a willingness to lie and destroy the life of another human being, for whatever twisted reason.
You see, dear readers, unlike most of the mainstream media, so politically-correct that every single female accusation against a male just has to be true, we tell it like it is and take a hard, unbiased look at the evidence. In this case, we think Thompson got a very raw deal.
MAKE IT UP AS YOU GO ALONG
Thompson's defense team got hold of a text message between the two women "victims." Navy Ensign Sara Stadler writes her gal pal:
"Hey, what's the story, so I don't mess it (the testimony under oath) up?"
(answer) "Say anything and everything. ha ha."
And to think, the one who laughed at the prospect of sending Maj. Thompson to the DB for a very long time, is now a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps.
How many other people can this sicko frame before her 20 years is up and she retires as a "PC-protected" bird colonel?
As for Stadler, her past may be catching up to her sooner than she thinks.
The alleged co-conspirator was recently hauled before a captain's mast for lying about a sexual relationship she had with a sailor aboard the destroyer Howard at San Diego.
Perish the thought that Stadler could have been lying when she and her swinging "sister" first got together to destroy Thompson.
On the day of the "crime," April 30, 2011, there was an annual croquet match between the Academy and St. John's College.
The JAG prosecutors, who had to know Thompson was railroaded, but chose the easier path of trying to cut another "conviction" notch on their belt at the expense of truth and justice, admitted both "victims" were not only drunk but played "strip poker" with the Marine major before climbing into the sack with him.
ACCUSOR WAITED A YEAR BEFORE FILING CHARGES
The accuser, who's now a Marine butter-bar, waited a whole year to suddenly realize she'd been "assaulted" even though her recollections of that day were "hazy due to all the alcohol she ingested.
Whatever happened to the dictum "found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt?" There's a mountain of evidence in this one, but today, when craven politicians and the knee-jerk liberal media make every female accusation out to be a slam-dunk conviction, no one is safe no matter if they are innocent.
We hope Maj. Thompson appeals this unfair sentence. He is guilty of no more than what Gen. Petraeus was when he banged his boot-licking biographer, LTC Broadwell, and in the process, betrayed his fat, well-paid wife back home.
The only difference is Petraeus was knowingly committing adultery, and so was his married gal pal.
Thompson is guilty all right. Of bad judgment in sleeping with a woman or women that were capable of lying and ruining his life forever.
