He only has himself to blame. Stanley McChrystal thought sucking up to Barack Hussein Obama would help him, but when all was said and done, it was the general's "poor judgment" that did him in. Hanging out with a known leftist reporter for "sex, drugs and rock and roll" magazine ROLLING STONE is not just stupid, it was suicide.
"I voted for you," gushed the lanky military man when ushered into the President's presence for all of 10 minutes last fall, the first time he was "called to the woodshed." Talking out of turn happens to be a habit with McChrystal, and Obama wanted to be sure that his much-decorated flag officer didn't get off script again. He made him sweat for a while as he dithered over sending 30,000 or 40,000 more troops into Afghanistan.
Harry Truman, an artillery captain in World War I, knew what to do. The man from Independence. Mo., one of our greatest presidents ever, did lots of unpopular things - like order the A-bomb dropped on Japan. That saved countless lives. He didn't let the Communists overrun South Korea. He even fired a popular general for insubordination.
Can you see the present occupant of the White House doing that? "Wait! Gotta take a poll and see what does me the least political damage," the politician says.
TROOPS NOT GRIEVING McCHRYSTAL'S DEPARTURE
McChrystal was not exactly loved by the troops, despite his well-publicized by the media visits to the field. One of his rules of engagement, knocking on a door before kicking it down, cost American lives. It may help win the "hearts and minds" of the local people, but where have we heard that phrase before? Oh, yeah. Right. In Vietnam. And we all know how that turned out.
Some right-wing commentators, especially Michael Savage, may try and make McChrystal into a hero, but he's just your average "political" general. When he banned FOX NEWS CHANNEL from the television in his headquarters, he knew word would get back to his master in Washington and that would be worth a certain number of brownie points. But in the end, lack of battlefield success, a less than reassuring public image, and a willingness to put on the kneepads at a moment's notice just wasn't enough.
Don't feel too sorry for McChrystal. He won't starve on his four-star general's pension. And don't think for a moment there isn't a big book deal for him down the road. Sleazy Gen. Tommy Franks cashed in from his fame, in more ways than one. Gen. "Stormin' Norman" Schwartzkopf made a pile of money with his book and CBS-TV contract after the Gulf War was over. McChrystal will get the "big bucks," too.
Save your prayers and sympathy for our brave troops in harm's way. They always end up paying the price in blood for the mistakes of their so-called "leaders."
