When a tree falls in the forest at midnight, no one hears a thing. That's been pretty much the game plan of Air Force brass who hope that the Maj. Jill Metzger cover-up is a "done deal." Gone and best forgotten.
Never mind that for three days in September 2006, the two-time Air Force Marathon winner's boyish mug was on every television screen and plastered across front pages of newspapers around the world.
Back then, speculation ran wild the super-achiever female officer had been "abducted" by sinister elements in the remote nation of Kyrgyzstan. Yellow ribbons were tied around trees in North Carolina and family members went on national TV to pray for Jill's safe return.
That was 18 long months ago, and since then, we've been treated to one of the most odious cover-ups in recent Air Force history. In an insult to all our men and women in blue, the Air Force top brass, led by Gen. T. Michael Moseley, the chief of staff, and former CENTCOM commander, Gen. Gary North, have refused to comment on the veracity of Metzger's incredible tale.
No one in the Air Force will comment. What do they have to hide? The "silence" is deafening.
TALL TALES OF "KIDNAPPING" and "DERRING-DO"
Jill claimed that she'd been "abducted" by strange people while off-base in the city of Bishkek; a "bomb" placed in her back pocket; and she, while in a "trance," was "shanghaied" by the evil ones to a hideout where, after three days, she managed to "overpower" one of her armed guards and run to safety barefoot for 30 miles in the middle of the night.
Yeah, right. Even a ten year-old could come up with a story better than that. Especially when it was revealed that Metzger not only had chopped hair dyed black, but the sticky stuff was all over the palms of her hands. Hmmmm. Could it be our heroine was in reality less than heroic?
Local news media reported the officer went to an abortion clinic. That might explain the pathetic attempt at disguise as well as being AWOL for three days after the procedure went wrong. That it took that long to dream up the story she told, shows Metzger may well have been in shock.
WE DARE COVER A STORY THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA FEARS IS
Those of you who have followed our dogged and determined reporting on this case - some dozen investigative articles in all - know that the mainstream media won't touch this story with a ten foot pole. Let us say, it is very "politically incorrect" to point out that a female major might have faked a "kidnapping" and caused an international incident.
What's worse is, that officer could be court-martialed if it was proven she'd lied and disobeyed orders. Just making a false official statement is enough to warrant an Article 32 preliminary hearing. And, of course, if Metzger had been a male, say enlisted man, with no "connections" like a retired colonel daddy and youthful OSI agent husband, he might be in the Leavenworth DB already.
We respect the mail we've received from dozens of hard-working, dedicated female service members who feel the obvious favoritism and double-standard here hurts them and demeans their many sacrifices to be taken seriously and on an even footing with their male counterparts.
NO STATEMENT FROM THE AIR FORCE -
JUST STONEWALLING AND OBSCURING THE TRUTH
After nearly a year of stonewalling and no statement, the Air Force quietly tried to medically retire Metzger on a PTSD "disability" pension. They succeeded, but not before MilitaryCorruption.com broke the exclusive story, thanks to disgusted USAF admin personnel at Moody A.F.B. who tipped us off and "anonymously" slipped us the paperwork over the transom.
Going AWOL, making a false official statement, securing an illegal abortion and all the obvious questions that entails - Metzger's hubby was back in the States - pales in comparison to the federal crime of pension fraud, especially when we have wounded and genuinely disabled vets coming home every day from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Some of them have arms and legs shot off, and yet they haven't been rewarded with an instant 100% disability pension. With them, PTSD is the least of their problems. What would the American people think of someone scamming or being helped to scam the system like that? And why would fat-cat generals bend over backwards to accommodate even a mini-celebrity like Metzger?
What does she know or could say that scares the hell out of them? What is the real truth in this case? We cannot say Metzger is a liar. We don't know for sure. But her story and subsequent Air Force cover-up is highly suspicious. We've offered to pay her for her account of what really happened. MCC is willing to give Metzger all the space she wants on our pages to tell her side of what happened. But her answer has been silence.
A MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH IN THE CASE -
DID MEDICAL EXAM REVEAL "ABORTION?"
Now, in a major breakthrough, MilitaryCorruption.com can report we have been told by what we consider an informed source that was at Manas A.F.B. in Kyrgyzstan the night Metzger returned to U.S. custody, that she was checked by medics and found to have been "two months pregnant" and had experienced a "recent abortion." That procedure sure wasn't performed on base, so perhaps the local media reports from Bishkek were correct, after all.
Our source, whom we are taking the extra precaution of not even revealing gender or rank of the person (to prevent them being "witch-hunted," as they are still in the Air Force) said if the truth was known, in that person's opinion, "serious charges" could still be brought against Jill Metzger.
Unlike our good fortune in obtaining actual paperwork in the Moody "retirement" case, we do not (yet) have copies of the paperwork our source swears they have seen. Since the Air Force refuses to respond to FOIA's - they have the worst record on that of all the military services - and because some general officers could see their careers crash and burn overnight - not to worry, brass hats, no Air Force flag officer has even been court-martialed and none will be - it's in Moseley and North's best interest to keep their mouth shut.
But in essence, they are saying something to all of America: "SCREW YOU! We don't have to, and we won't give an explanation for what really happened in the Metzger case." That is an outrage, and if there is any justice at all, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates should demand they give a public explanation.
Unfortunately, Gates has operated with a "hands off" attitude toward the high brass, so probably the top generals will be long retired on their lucrative pensions before a development breaks that will nail this case to the wall. The "smoking gun," or incriminating document, if you will.
$100,000 REWARD OFFER STILL ON THE TABLE
Right now, we are still offering a $100,000 reward to anyone - military or civilian - who can provide us with information leading to the arrest and conviction of those who may be responsible for deceiving our men and women in uniform and defrauding the disability pension system. All one need do is e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Your identity will be kept strictly confidential.
What a sad state of affairs it is that the Air Force OSI and FBI are more apt to try and hunt down and silence our latest source than to bring forth the truth in this case. Well, our editor is willing to go to jail if need be, to protect and defend the First Amendment, freedom of the press, and the identities of our confidential sources.
We just ask one thing. "Knock" on the door, don't kick it down. Arizona is a 2nd Amendment state. And, in honor of the late Don Bolles, we have a "Newspaper Shield" law here that our elected leaders take very seriously. You should, too.
