It took nine years for the long arm of the law to reach out and nab an Air Force officer for raping a female enlisted airman.

Lt. Col. Mike Briggs, the chief of safety at Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany, gets five months behind bars and a dismissal from the Air Force.

Sources say what shot down the fighter jock's future was an admission he made on the telephone to his now-staff sergeant victim.

THE OSI TAPED THE PHONE CALL

"I'm sorry I raped you," he sobbed, apparently oblivious to the fact the female had already gone to the OSI, and they were taping the call.

With that kind of proof, Briggs' initial contention the sex had been purely "consensual" was totally undermined.

The 18-year Air Force veteran might have escaped such a severe penalty if he'd just kept his mouth shut. But the former fighter-pilot took a risk when his victim called him and got the colonel talking about that sexual assault of long ago.
