We've all known them - brass hat's wives who wear their hubby's rank and make life miserable for lower-ranking troops. Well, if an on-going Army investigation is on target - and we hear it is - Leslie Drinkwine could be a subordinate officer's worst nightmare.

The shrew-like spouse of COL Brian Drinkwine, commander of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Div. at Ft. Bragg, N.C., not only threw her weight around and threatened her hubby's underlings, she allegedly made good on promises to inflict punishment on them. Both the colonel and his wife deny any such thing.

But LTC Frank Jenio and his CMD SGT MAJ Herbert Pickett were relieved of command during deployment to Afghanistan. The "official" reason given was both men supposedly used "poor judgment" which, and we quote, "fostered a command climate inconsistent with Army values." Translation: The charge could be and was, as frivolous as being nailed for spitting on the sidewalk. If they want to get you, they will always find a way.

And Jenio, the earlier object of a "chewing out" over the telephone by COL Drinkwine's powerful wife, told investigators he felt he'd been retaliated against. "If you want me fired, go ahead and do it!" the red-faced officer reportedly shouted into the phone before ending the contentious conversation. He said the reason for Leslie Drinkwine's vitriol was, she was "complaining about the roster" of the unit's Family Readiness Group (FRG).

"MY WIFE SPEAKS FOR ME!" SAYS INDULGENT COLONEL

Instead of reining in his wife's invective and interference, COL Drinkwine is alleged to have declared: "My wife speaks for me." An investigation of the charges later tagged the colonel as a "key enabler" of his wife's bad behavior.

Verbal complaints were made up the chain-of-command, but the situation continued to fester, sources tell MilitaryCorruption.com. Morale was being damaged.

Finally, things got so tense, the 18th Corps commander, Lt. Gen. Frank Helmick, ordered Mrs. Drinkwine "banned" from "any and all contact with the FRG and the rest of the brigade." The general also acted decisively in initiating a formal probe into what turned into a lengthy laundry list of complaints about the woman's misconduct.

According to the investigation, Leslie Drinkwine one time showed up unannounced at the home of LTC Mike Wawrzyniak and screamed at his wife Pamela for a solid half-hour. Doting hubby, COL Drinkwine, allegedly sat outside in the car while his wife loudly berated the subordinate officer's wife.

More tantrums followed. On another occasion, Pamela Wawrzyniak told investigators Mrs. Drinkwine forced her car off the road, blocking her way with a truck and then jumped out and proceeded to scream at her in a "cursed-filled" tirade.

"If you don't show up (for a FRG meeting), I'll hang your husband!" the colonel's wife allegedly said.

Inside the car, sat Mrs. Wawrzyniak's 7 year-old son, who reportedly said to his mother: "Mom, I was afraid she was gonna hurt you."

LESLIE DRINKWINE THREATENS IN CURSE-FILLED TIRADE
TO HAVE FIELD-GRADE OFFICER "RELIEVED"

Still more officers and their wives were the objects of Leslie Drinkwine's insatiable wrath. MAJ Fred Dela Cruz, the brigade's rear detachment commander, said the colonel's crazed wife cursed him out and threatened to have him "relieved" by her husband. When Mrs. Drinkwine was questioned by investigators about this incident, she denied the threat, but allowed as to how she "may have used profanity" during what she herself termed "a heated discussion."

We wish to commend Gen. Helmick's decisive action and also Lt. Gen. William Webster, commander of U.S. Army Forces, Central Command, for initiating his own follow-up investigation into one of the worst cases of wives wearing their husband's rank we have ever heard of. Also kudos go out to the Fayetteville OBSERVER for doing a FOIA and exposing this outrage in the first place.

It's unlikely Col. Drinkwine is a "hen-pecked hubby," cowering in the corner while his out-of-control wife causes mayhem in the workplace. He knew and apparently approved of Leslie Drinkwine's bizarre and unsettling behavior. If he really did "enable" her to brutalize his brigade's officers and wives, and we think he did, this is one colonel who should never be promoted to flag rank. Maybe the best thing for the Army is to "retire" this officer and put both him and his trouble-making wife "out to pasture."

[EDITOR'S NOTE: How about it, gang? Ever served under a brass hat's wife as terrible-tempered as COL Drinkwine's frau? Tell us your horror stories. We'd like to know about what you've been through, and may publish the one with the worst top-ranker's wife. Thanks.]
