DROPPED IN LOVESICK
The bizarre case of lovesick Navy Capt. Lisa Nowak, the NASA astronaut - dubbed "astro-nut" by late-night TV comedians - has taken yet another strange turn.
Despite protests by local police, an Orlando, Fla. judge has tossed out attempted murder charges against the 43 year-old space traveler. Now she faces still serious but lesser charges of intent to kidnap, attempt to inflict bodily harm, burglary and assault and battery.
The troubled mom of twins, estranged from her husband back in Houston, Tex., remains free on bond. She must wear an electronic monitoring device around her ankle to prevent possible flight.
MilitaryCorruption.com sources tell us the Navy will make no move to court-martial Nowak until the civilian court case is decided. For now, the aging but still attractive, super-achiever astronaut has been suspended from her duties and reportedly is receiving treatment for depression and a mental disorder.
Our informants in Houston say Nowak's love-interest, hunky Navy Cmdr. and fellow astronaut William Oefelein, remains close with his much-younger galpal, USAF Capt. Colleen Shipman. Investigators are trying to find out if a "love triangle" existed, or Nowak's romantic interest in Oefelein was all in her head. A mushy love letter to the male officer was found in Nowak's car in February when she was arrested after trying to break into Shipman's vehicle, while the captain was in it, at an Orlando, Fla. airport.
The story attracted world-wide interest as Nowak was wearing "diapers" at the time, claiming she needed them on because she had to make time driving 900 miles from Texas to Florida to confront the woman she apparently felt had captured the heart of her astronaut colleague.
