Patrick Edmond's Naval career is over, and the 20 year-old Mississippi man is now serving time in the brig.
The third year midshipman was the first USNA student court-martialed in three years. He will serve his six-month sentence at Norfolk and then be dismissed from the Navy.
At his court-martial, held at the Washington Navy Yard, Edmond's attorney told the seven-member panel his client had "consensual sex" with a former girlfriend.
FIRST USNA COURT-MARTIAL IN THREE YEARS
A "sodomy" charge, was thrown out, but the rape conviction was enough to ruin the midshipman's life.
The sex "crime" is said to have taken place in the female classmate's dorm at Annapolis last October.
This is the first USNA court-martial since 2008 (see related stories box below). Immediately after the verdict was handed down, Edmond was taken into custody and sent to the Norfolk lock-up to begin sentence.
