One more year, and Nathan Penalosa was going to be an officer and graduate of the Air Force Academy. Now he's on his way to prison, instead.
A 2002 immigrant from the Philippines, Penalosa was raised by his mom and served for a time in the USAF as an enlisted man. The super achiever won admission to the AFA, Class of 2017. His future looked very bright indeed.
He was an honors student, in his third year at Colorado Springs, when everything fell apart.
SOLD DRUGS TO FELLOW CADETS
It was a random drug search in his dorm room that nailed the third year student.as not only a user, but drug distributor to his fellow cadets.
The junk, obtained via the Internet and mailed to his room, included "Molly," the psychedelic drug LSD, and prescription anti-sleep pill Modafinil. That was the substance that got Penalosa's roommate, former Cadet Luca Simmons, kicked out of the Academy last year. Now Simmons was back, testifying he got the stuff from his old pal Nathan.
Ace defense attorney Frank Spinner of Colorado Springs worked a miracle, saving his client from what could have been a total of 70 years behind bars. The former Air Force JAG worked out a plea bargain deal with the prosecution that the disgraced cadet serve just 36 months in a military prison.
PLENTY OF REGRETS NOW
Penalosa pleaded guilty to nine charges, including use, distribution and sale of drugs. He also agreed to testify against cadets in other cases and showed genuine remorse for his self-destructive actions.
"What have I done to my mother?" he lamented out loud.
Another question might be, what has he done to himself and the Air Force Academy?
