We've written literally hundreds of stories here on this web site that deal with the dark side of military injustice and corruption. And more than a few of our articles involve sex crimes. But even our editor, a former United Press International correspondent, who covered the seamy side of life in New York City and Philadelphia as well as overseas, was shocked by the sickening facts of the case you are about to read below.

The Marines like to say they are THE FEW, THE PROUD, THE MARINES. While we still hold that branch of the military in the highest regard, many present and former members of the Corps have to be hanging their heads in shame tonight to learn that one of their own - a former captain - could be so cruel and manipulative of innocent children.

Michael Joseph Pepe is a pedophile of the lowest kind. His twisted mind drove him in a sick compulsion to have sexual relations with pre-teen girls. Investigators found Pepe had molested kids as young as nine years of age! His oldest victim, of the seven abuse counts he was recently convicted on in Los Angeles federal court, was only 12.

Even your average rapist will not attack children that young. But Pepe did. The big, burley Oxnard, Calif. man must have seemed like a huge "monster," looming over the youngsters, as he drugged and tied them down with restraints before raping them on his bed.

CAMBODIA GETS SERIOUS ABOUT CHILD PEDOPHILE CRACK-DOWN

Pepe first came to the kingdom of Cambodia in 2003, just before officials there began cracking down on the flood of child pedophiles and sex perverts from foreign countries who flock to and infest the nations of Southeast Asia. We would like to commend the Cambodian authorities for arresting these cretins and turning them over to their own nations for prosecution and incarceration.

Convicted of seven counts of "engaging in illicit sexual conduct in foreign places," Pepe faces a maximum penalty of more than 210 years in prison when he is sentenced this September. Odds are excellent that the disgraced former Marine captain won't ever harm another child again.

During the trial in Los Angeles, six girls - between the ages of 9 and 12 - testified that Pepe drugged, beat, bound and raped them. On a tip from a young girl who escaped from his Phnom Penh villa, Cambodian police arrested the American in 2006. He was extradited to the United States the following year.

EVIDENCE FOUND IN A PEDOPHILE "HOUSE OF HORRORS"

Investigators found a sickening trove of pedophile trash when they searched Pepe's home. Child pornography, mind-altering drugs, cloth strips used as "restraints," condoms, Viagra, even children's clothing.

Images of Pepe assaulting some of his victims were discovered on the man's personal computer.

The ex-Marine paid a prostitute a "finder's fee" to bring him new, young victims, Assistant U.S. District Attorney Patricia Donahue said. The going price for a referral was $10, and authorities report Pepe would pay up to $300 to a poor family for the permanent "use" of their children.

It is not unusual for poverty-stricken peasants, especially in Thailand, to sell their kids into sexual slavery for several hundred American dollars.

Pepe's public defender, Carl Gunn, said he "might file an appeal" after sentencing. In the meantime, the pedophile predator remains behind bars. Where he belongs.
