Take a good look at this mug photo and tell us if you'd like to wake up seeing a creep like that standing over you, gun in hand. This creature used to be an army light colonel. Now he's going to be a convict. Robert Butts is about to meet "Bubba" in the Big House.
The retired field-grade officer has been sentenced to 25 years in a federal prison in Puttawatiamie County District Court for the attempted sexual assault and kidnapping of a Council Bluffs, Iowa woman.
Butts' attorney, Drew Kouris, tried every which-way to show his client had been "out of his head." A psychiatrist testified Butts had a history of sleep-walking, PTSD, suffered from Gulf War Syndrome, incurred head injuries as a child, was an alcoholic, had been "stressed out" at work, and was in deep depression. Everything but "The Devil made me do it." But none of that did any good. The would-be rapist has to serve at least 70% of his prison stretch to be eligible for parole.
It was Veteran's Day, Nov. 11, 2009 when Butts broke into Regina Walker's apartment and, waving a handgun in her face, snarled at the terrorized woman to disrobe. Unbeknownst to him, the victim's sister Jennifer was able to sneak into a bathroom, lock the door and call 911 on her cell phone. The cops quickly arrived before the sex attack could begin.
"I can't remember a thing. I must have blacked out," the pig-faced Butts protested to police. "I guess I lost my mind." One thing's for sure. He's lost his freedom. The incident ensures 44 year-old Butts will be old enough for Social Security before he's back on the street. His attorney has promised to file an appeal.
