Robert Underwood's early years included extreme violence. He witnessed his mentally-ill mother murder his two siblings. Then she turned the gun on her son, firing five slugs into the boy, leaving him for dead. He was all of 9 years old.
Some 37 years later, LTC Underwood stands accused of threatening to kill his estranged wife, the colonel's commanding officer, and - according to onetime girlfriend Selena Kiptso - blowing up the Washington State capitol building at Olympia.
The staff officer with the 191st Infantry Brigade, a training support outfit for the U.S. Army Reserve and National Guard, pleaded "not guilty" to felony charges and remains free on $250,000 bail.
Sources tell MilitaryCorruption.com the 46 year-old field grade officer has been going through a bitter divorce from his wife of 18 years.
BOASTED OF HIRING A HITMAN, EX-GALPAL TELLS COPS
Underwood's gal pal told cops she ended it with her light colonel boyfriend when they clashed over a nude photo she discovered on his laptop. The pix allegedly was of one of the officer's two teenage daughters. Kipsto claimed she confronted Underwood about it and they argued.
It was then, she said, he bragged he'd pay $150,000 to a hit man to rub out both Kara Underwood and his boss, LTC Shawn Reed.
There's no evidence he followed through on the boast or whether or not he was drunk when he made it.
Investigators say Underwood could face up to five years in prison if convicted on all charges lodged against him. The officer entered the Army in 1992 and would have been eligible for retirement later this year.
