"I made a mistake - a big mistake," Robert Ruks said in federal court for the Eastern District of Virginia. "I feel bad about this. I just want it to be over."

The Navy contractor was caught making false statements that he had inspected welds on numerous warships. He had not. Of nine aircraft carriers and four submarines Ruks claimed he checked, in actuality, he had not inspected even one.

Such a reckless disregard for the truth and outright laziness could easily have cost the lives of Naval personnel.

In fact, investigators say Ruks OK'd the sub USS Missouri, but a follow-up inspection found a defective pipe joint on the boat. That was just one example of how Ruk's falsified inspections could have led to loss of life.

RE-DO AND REAL INSPECTIONS COSTS TAXPAYERS BIG BUCKS

The 34 year-old defense contractor from Northrop-Grumman cost US taxpayers some $654,000, the expense of having another inspector actually check the warships' welds.

Ruks, a native of Portsmouth, Va., might have gotten away with it if a co-worker hadn't tipped off authorities. The defense contractor's supervisor questioned Ruks, but the dirtbag chose to lie about what he had done.

Found guilty of falsifying official documents, Ruks faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced on August 12.

The cheater, who worked at both Norfolk and Newport News shipyards, has been released on $5000 bail.
