We call 'em as we see them, and in this case, a commanding officer and her CMC have gotten a raw deal. The Navy ought to be ashamed.

CMDR Sara Santoski, the C.O. of Norfolk-based HM-15, and Bobby Anderson, her command master chief, have been fired.

The boilerplate from a Navy flak is, the brass - namely CAPT Paul Espisito, commander of Helicopter Sea Combat Wing Atlantic - deep-sixed the female skipper because he had "lost confidence" in her "ability to lead." The excuse for tossing CMC Anderson into the drink was a vague "unsatisfactory performance."

SANTOSKI NOT AT FAULT, READERS SAY

After only a little more than three months in charge, Santoski's career is ended for things that may well have stemmed from problems that festered under the unit's previous command. At least that's what our readers are telling us.

One former sailor, who also wrote in to Navy TIMES, hit the nail right on the head.

"When things in a command go to hell in a hand basket after someone takes over, it's usually not the new persons fault," Tim Blitzer said. "I know the Navy likes a good crucifixion, but let's make sure that the right person is on the cross. Commanders don't fail that fast. Such problems are the product of 12 - 18 months of prior leadership."

What Blitzer was referring to, is the bad fortune of two incidents that took place just weeks after Santoski took over. On July 19, a MH-53 Sea Stallion crashed in Oman and two sailors were killed. Just one month later, another big chopper had a hard landing at Bahrain International Airport. No one was hurt in that mishap, but the Navy set out to blame someone, and Santoski was the target.

She is the 16th Navy commanding officer to be fired so far this year. CMC Anderson is the 11th senior enlisted member made to walk the plank.
