What torpedoed the career of the hot-shot chief of boat on the trouble-plagued USS Louisville? "The silence is deafening," says a veteran submarine crew member.

Navy officials aren't talking, but sources tell MilitaryCorruption.com Senior Chief Yeoman Savan Patel was made to "walk the plank" after being caught up in a DUI incident. A member of the crew told an MCC reporter Patel was a "belligerent drunk" and "often wanted to fight when he got tanked up."

The "official" reason is typical boiler-plate. The captain "lost confidence" in Patel's ability to serve.

The skipper of the fast-attack sub, CMDR Lee Sisco, didn't waste any time pulling the trigger on his top-enlisted man. He knew he had to act fast or perhaps his own career might be adversely impacted.

AN "AFFIRMATIVE-ACTION" COB
PROMOTED AHEAD OF HIS ABILITY?

Patel, said by some to be a classic example of "affirmative action" promotion of junior sailors into positions they are not prepared to fill, had been made chief of the boat after only 12.5 years in the Navy. He assumed his duties on the Louisville 18 months ago, in the wake of a scandal that saw the boat's previous COB busted on sex charges.

For all the sordid details, see our "related stories box" below. That E-9, Daniel Jones, was another fast-ranker, although not nearly as quick to reach COB as Patel.

The 32 year-old, from Edison, N.J., had seen duty on three other fast-attack subs before coming to the Louisville in July of 2009.

Patel's FACEBOOK page gives a small insight into his thinking. He lists his "likes" as: Barack Obama, The Navy TIMES, and Hawaii.
