Julie ScheneckerIt all comes down to this.

Was Julie Schenecker crazy when she killed her teenage son and daughter in Tampa three years ago?

If the jury can be convinced she was off her rocker but needs medical help, the 53 year-old former wife of an Army colonel might go free if, at some future date, a doctor feels she is able to be reintegrated into society.

The prosecution, which took the death penalty "off the table" seeks to have the tall, former Army linguist and enlisted woman put away for good without parole.

There is no question that COL Parker Schenecker's ex-wife - he divorced her after the grisly slayings - murdered their kids in cold-blood.

WERE THE SLAYINGS "PREMEDITATED?"

The evidence shows that on January 28, 2011, Julie blasted her 13 year-old son at close range with a handgun and shot his sister in the back of the head, and then face, while she sat at home in front of a personal computer, working on school homework.

She later told cops that she committed the killings because her son and daughter were "mouthy" to her and "talked back."

What counts against the crazed killer in this case is a letter she wrote prior to the incident about Florida's three-day wait law for people who purchase handguns. Schenecker put down on paper that that would "delay the massacre."

Can premeditation be proved? If so, it is hard to see the zombie-like soccer mom being sprung after a few months when some wacko doctor decides she's "all right now." The trial has gotten off to a slow start in Hillsborough County Court in Tampa because so many people have strong opinions about the well-publicized slayings.

A HISTORY OF MENTAL ILLNESS

Our sources on the ground tell us to expect the proceedings to last at least three weeks. Whether Schenecker takes the witness stand herself remains to be seen.

There is at least one factor working in her favor. The deadly mom has a history of mental illness and has been diagnosed in the past with bi-polar disorder and severe depression.

For a time (see the related stories box below) Julie's defense attorneys were blaming Schenecker's spouse, the colonel, for her killing rampage.

The strategy was to claim COL Schenecker didn't get his wife needed psychiatric help when she first showed signs of being mentally disturbed. It was an odd strategy, as that would in effect be putting some of the blame for the death of his own children on the senior officer's shoulders. And that is not where it belongs.
