ARMY COLONEL ARRESTED FOR D.U.I. IN TEXAS
Yes, we know. Thousands of you out there are asking yourselves right now, what happened to the Army's weight control standards? Or should we say, "double-standard" when it comes to high-ranking females who the brass want to boost in order to show how "politically correct" they can be?
But we have more important fish to fry today. A much ballyhooed female colonel, the first of her gender to command an air defense artillery brigade at Fort Bliss, Tex., has been picked up off post by local cops and charged with D.U.I. That's normally a career-ender, at least for soldiers, NCO's and most officers.
Shana Peck, however, has been a poster girl for female advancement in the Army, and at age 49, might even have a shot at brigadier general's stars before she puts in retirement papers. She's been in the Army for more than 25 years.
Many of our readers down there on the Mexican border and throughout the Army want to know if this full bird will get to go out the door with her rank intact? There are innumerable cases of senior non-coms who have lost their pension and been busted in rank for a similar offense.
WILL IT (ONCE AGAIN) BE,"DIFFERENT
We don't know what kind of defense Peck will mount - or what those will do who'd prefer this all "go away" so they don't smudge their own careers. She has pleaded "not guilty" at her August 14th arraignment in El Paso. There are no details immediately available to us on whether or not Peck took a breathalyzer test, or why the police hauled her in for driving under the influence.
The burly colonel from Niceville, FL isn't getting much support from G.I.s who suspect she'll retire "in grade" and slip out the back door with a minimum of punishment.
"Enjoy your retirement (should be at the 0-5 grade). This sure wasn't the first time you drove under the influence, and I wonder how many soldiers you punished over the years for the same actions you were performing at the time?" wrote Richard Telesco on www.armywtfmoments.com
He has a good point. The "regs" read that an officer can only retire in the last grade "satisfactorily" served in. That means a colonel and commanding officer with a drunk driving rap on their record slips away as a light colonel. We'll keep a close eye on this one, gang, and get back to you pronto if COL Peck gets favorable treatment.
